Restaurant Roundup: Taco rides, new vegetarian offerings, award-winning beer returns

Aug. 5, 2021

Scheels has organized Taco Tuesday Bike Rides on the second Tuesday of the month. Join the group for the two remaining events — Aug. 10 and Sept. 14 — gathering at 5:45 p.m. on the south side of the store at the Western Mall. The group rides for about an hour on the bike trail – last month they went to Falls Park and back – and then heads across the parking lot from Scheels to eat, drink and socialize at Vinyl Taco and Vinyl Social Club. Cyclists get 20 percent off their food.

Vegetarian offerings are on the menu now at Old Skool Jersey Rippers & Balls. Food truck owner Francisco Gajardo has created new vegetarian balls. They’re filled with creamy risotto, mushrooms, carrots, peas and mozzarella, and served with marinara for dipping. “They’re smaller (than the original balls), so they have a nicer crunch to them,” owner Francisco Gajardo said. After several requests for a ripper sandwich without the ripper – a Jersey-style hot dog – he has put together “El Fredo.” It starts with naan filled with the vegetarian balls, layered with slices of cheese, topped with grilled potatoes, peppers and onions, and finished off with marinara and parmesan.

Severance Brewing Co. is celebrating its second anniversary with a party Saturday that includes a new batch of the Downtown Sioux Falls Mash Madness winner, Coconut Zambooki, a sweet blonde ale with toasted coconut and coffee from The Source. The brewery at 701 N. Phillips Ave. also is releasing a black raspberry chocolate stout and a pale ale and bringing back customer-favorite Koala Drop Kick, a hazy double IPA. There will be live music starting at noon, yard games, and anniversary glassware for sale. Harry’s Yellow Submarine will be selling food in the afternoon, and Windy City Bites will be there in the evening. Come early for soft-serve beer in a cone. The party runs from noon to 11 p.m.

Emer-GenZ Eats & Treats reopens Monday under new ownership in its new location in Sioux Falls. Nevin Icenogle is operating the take-and-bake business out of the kitchen in Liberty Hall, the former VFW building at 49th and Minnesota, and selling the meals through The Fruit Truck Market, which also is located there and is open Monday through Saturday. Once the revamped website is ready, customers also will be able to order and pay for meals online and pick them up at the market. Chicken enchiladas, Million-Dollar Spaghetti and shepherd’s pie are available daily, and Icenogle is offering two or three additional meals every day. See the weekly menu on Facebook.

The farm near Lennox is featuring honey from its hives and those across the state. Hours are 1 to 6 p.m.

Texas Roadhouse has two new drinks that are helping save honeybees. A dollar from every purchase in August of Beach Bee and Tennessee Nectar will go to The Bee Conservancy. Both drinks feature Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.

A Homestead Brew near Valley Springs is celebrating the harvesting of its hops with a party Friday night. Guests can help with the harvest, and the crew will start running the plants through the harvester at 5 p.m. They’ll add the Centennial hops to an IPA that’s already fermenting for a future release. Homestead also will release a strawberry jam beer. Tacos de Gringo will serve food, and the night will include the weekly hunt for the king of hearts to benefit Horseback Miracles. The party runs until 9 p.m.

Cherry Rock Farms south of Brandon is hosting Coffea Roasterie’s mobile express bar Saturday. Stop by starting at 10 a.m. for fresh produce and a locally roasted coffee drink.
