Restaurant Roundup: New menus, pizza specials, state’s best coffee shop

March 17, 2022

The new Bill of Fare menu at both locations of The Attic Bar & Grill embraces seafood for Lent. Options include Cajun fried oysters, a Havarti tuna melt and a Thai curry shrimp bowl. There’s also a Greek spin on a taco with ground lamb and beef served on a grilled pita with tzatziki sauce, spicy sour cream, marinated tomatoes, red onion and a mint chiffonade. Go light with the asparagus and watermelon radish salad, or indulge with a slice of lemon raspberry cheesecake from The Cake Lady.

The Attic hoped to open its third location — this one in Brandon — in April, but the timeline has been pushed to June because of supply chain issues, co-owner and chef Nick Mangene said today.

Buy a bowl of soup at the Sioux Falls Food Co+op’s hot bar through Sunday at all proceeds will benefit Co-op Ukraine and its efforts to rebuild food access in the war-torn country. The kitchen crew is offering two Ukrainian-inspired soups: borscht, which is vegan and gluten-free, and pork rib and sauerkraut, which is gluten-free. The soup is available from 11 a.m. to about 7 p.m.

Sickies Garage is back with its annual Hooky Day Hoops promotion. Print your get-out-of-work doctor’s note and redeem it at the restaurant for a free appetizer during the first round of March Madness games, which are today and Friday. Get your “sick day” note here.

A Homestead Brew is having a beer branding party Saturday. The taproom for the brewery that’s east of Sioux Falls opens at 2 p.m. Select a suggested beer, head over to the bonfire and taste how branding it with a stainless steel rod caramelizes the drink and changes the flavor. Salas Salsas will begin serving food at 5 p.m. The menu will be Quesi-tacos with a choice of pork or chicken in guajillo and chicken tacquitos.

Pizzas are back on the menu at Carnaval Brazilian Grill. They’re made from scratch and cooked in the restaurant’s stone pizza oven. The Rio has Carnaval’s signature cinnamon roasted pineapple, pepperoni, jalapenos, parmesan chicken and mozzarella. The Gaucho has the restaurant’s signature Picanha beef, mozzarella, mushrooms, chimichurri and cheese. The Samba features pepperoni, mozzarella, arugula and a drizzle of hot honey. The Classic Margherita is as simple as it gets: tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil.

Pizza di Paolo is offering pizza by the slice again and has introduced a couple of daily specials. On Mondays, buy a slice and get a free fountain drink. On Tuesdays, buy one 14-inc pizza and get a second one at half-price.

Tired of the same old chicken at Chipotle Mexican Grill? The build-your-own meal fast-casual concept has introduced its first chicken innovation in its 29-year history. Pollo Asado is available for a limited time. Chicken is tossed in a spice blend before being grilled. It’s chopped into bite-size pieces and finished with a marinade that includes garlic and guajillo peppers, along with a spritz of lime juice and cilantro.

Michael Haskett, owner of M.B. Haskett Delicatessen, was named as one of 20 semifinalists for a James Beard Award for top chef in the Midwest, but he didn’t make the finalist list of 11 chefs, which was released Wednesday. One of the finalists, though, has ties to South Dakota. Sean Sherman, an Oglala Lakota from the Pine Ridge Reservation, opened Owamni in Minneapolis last year, focusing on “the true flavors of North America.” Owamni is one of 11 restaurants nationwide vying for the title of best new restaurant.

The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. has been named South Dakota’s best coffee shop by Food & Wine magazine, which spent three years traveling across the U.S. to research the list. Owners Corey Gerlach and Mary Campbell have been roasting coffee since 2016 and moved the operation into the coffee shop when it opened in August 2020 at 311 E. 12th St. The magazine’s write-up focused on the location, “where the vibe (of being probably the coolest block in town) is inescapable.” Find the full list here.

Saturday’s Dakota Coffee Festival at the Sioux Falls Convention Center will bring together 10 roasters from the region with coffee samples, and baristas will compete in a latte art competition. Specialty coffee gurus Jim Ngokwey of Mighty Peace Coffee, which was born out of the Congolese peace movement, and Luis Sossa of Cosecha Traders, which supports small coffee farmers in southwestern Colombia, will give talks. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online. Event center manager ASM Global has partnered with The Community Outreach to donate event funds to help provide housing, transportation and utility assistance, as well as mentoring programs that provide financial literacy education in the Sioux Falls area.

Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que has added catfish and salmon to the menu for Lent. Get a crispy catfish sandwich or a Nashville Hot version. Sweetwater catfish fingers are available daily, but you can get all-you-can-eat on Fridays for $17. The salmon offering comes grilled, glazed and caramelized on a smoldering cedar plank with two sides and a cornbread muffin.

In case you missed it, Nacho Fries are back on the menu for a limited time at Taco Bell. They’re the No. 1 limited-time offering from the chain.

Ruby Tuesday is offering daily lunch specials through March. On Tuesdays, the restaurant on Shirley Avenue offers $5 cheeseburgers or grilled chicken sandwiches with french fries or tater tots.
