Restaurant Roundup: Sloppy Weiner’s woes, Look’s breakfast, Sunny’s opens downtown

Nov. 4, 2021

Less than two months after opening, The Sloppy Weiner food truck was totaled last weekend in an overnight hit-and-run accident. Owners Bryan and Shannon Krueger have started a GoFundMe effort because they’re running into insurance issues and will begin saving money to buy another truck.

In the meantime, other businesses are helping out by hosting pop-up events for The Sloppy Weiner. On Sundays, the Kruegers will be serving their full menu at Fresh Horses Saloon in Harrisburg from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., starting this weekend. They’ll be at Chef Ellen near 69th and Western from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, starting Nov. 13.

Look’s Marketplace has started serving breakfast sandwiches and toast. The menu features five varieties of sandwiches and two types of toasts, all of which are made on on Look’s Bakehouse bread or English muffins. They’re served from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Sunday.

Sunny’s Pizzeria opens tonight in EightyOne Arcade Bar. It will serve the same menu as the original location, which remains open. Kitchen hours are 5 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Sunday.

Sunny’s Pizzeria to expand to downtown

Hecho Con Amor will be selling its signature QuesoBirria tacos and BirriaPizza at Saturday’s Friends & Family Kickback at The Multi-Cultural Center. Ashley Rocio started her catering business in April and did a few pop-up events over the summer at Da’Clique Sports Bar & Grill. She caters for events and also does in-home experiences, where guests can watch her prepare the food. Many of her recipes have been passed down through the generations of her mother’s family in the village of Penjamo in central Mexico. Someday, Rocio hopes to have a food truck and eventually expand into a restaurant. Saturday’s vendor fair from noon to 7 p.m. also includes live music and a basketball tournament. Donations also will be taken for Project Warm-Up Winter, an effort to provide winter outerwear for students in the Sioux Falls School District.

Sweet Cheeks, the new self-service ice cream and topping bar, now sells hard ice cream. Get it by the pint in the display freezer. Recent flavors have included butter pecan and Dancing With the Stars, which is tuxedo chocolate ice cream with glittering stars, swirled with whipped cream.

Breadico has been expanding its menu. New treats include a cashew butter cookie and a whole wheat sugar cookie. For pastries, cranberry brie along with ham and cheese have been added to the daily offerings.

Learn how to decorate gorgeous cookies like these in the first class offered in Prairie Cocoa & Confections’ new storefront. Executive pastry chef Keyes Clemmer is teaching a hands-on autumn cookie class at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in the shop at 401 E. Eighth St. Sip on a complimentary mocktail while you learn how to decorate a baker’s dozen cookies to take home. Tickets are $50 and available on EventBrite.

With the colder weather, take-and-bake family meals are back at the three Stensland Family Farms retail stores. They’re stocked in the freezer cases, with new offerings arriving every Tuesday or Wednesday. This week’s options include Buffalo Chicken Mac N Cheese, Sundried Tomato & Chicken Pasta and Stuffed Pepper Soup.

A Homestead Brew is describing Saturday’s new beer release as a “field in a glass.” Sergeant Pepper, an American light lager, is brewed with heirloom tomatoes, six varieties of smoked peppers and the farm’s Cascade hops. The brewery near Valley Springs also is having a salsa contest Saturday. It starts at 3:30 p.m., and the first 30 tasters will be the judges. Brewery hours that day are 2 to 9 p.m.

The softshell crab po’ boy is back for a limited time at Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen.

Several restaurants are offering specials for military members as Veterans Day approaches. If you’re looking for deals, we’ll keep updating this daily through Nov. 11. Offers are good on Veterans Day unless noted.
