Restaurant Roundup: Restaurant changes menu model, burger for a good cause, May features

May 11, 2023

Umami Cafe and Catering has moved away from a fixed menu to one that will change weekly or even within the same week. The cafe inside Signature Flight Support at 3501 N. Aviation Lane said the change is to keep things fresh for regulars who dine there multiple times each week. It also takes advantage of the ever-changing inventory the restaurant has because of its catering business. The kitchen also can accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions.

One recent lunch feature included this triple decker BLT with potato salad.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday with grab-and-go hours from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The cafe was grab-and-go only this week but returns to regular hours the week of May 15.

Talk about a burger for a good cause. Next time you visit the Pa & Sons food truck, consider ordering the VCP burger. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Veterans Community Project, which recently opened its first tiny homes for homeless veterans. Plus you’ll enjoy a burger topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles, grilled onions, bacon and Bravo Bravo Que-BBQ sauce. You can follow the food truck here.

Polar Bites opens at its original location at 501 E. 41st St. in a modified shipping container on May 12. Hours will be 1 to 9 p.m. daily. Mention “free shaved ice Friday,” and get a free small, single flavor treat at either location.

Chocolate marbled doughnuts are back at Flyboy Donuts for the summer. They’re available Saturday and Sunday and can be preordered at www.flyboydonuts.com.

Sioux Falls Food Co-op has a new Community Dinner program. A co-op cooked meal will be served for $5 from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday featuring a different meat or vegan option each week. Dine in or take it to go. Meals are designed to be modest and affordable. The May 17 meal is a baked potato bar and spring mix salad.

There’s more to share now when you order a pizza at Remedy at 611 — that’s the Remedy location at 611 N. West Ave. The pizzas are now 16 inches and offered in cheese, pepperoni, chicken bacon ranch and four meat varieties. For $20 get a pitcher of beer and a pizza or popcorn chicken.

Note: The pizza is bigger than that now.

May food features have started at Monk’s Ale House. The El Guapo Pizza includes red enchilada sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, chicken, jalapeños, bell peppers, and red onions. It’s topped with shredded lettuce, tortilla chips, and a lime crema.

And the brie and peach toast is potato bread toast smothered with creamy Brie and topped with caramelized peaches, arugula, and a balsamic drizzle. It’s served with a side salad and your choice of dressing.

Here’s a drink that’s arrived just in time for summer-like temperatures: The new frozen peach bourbon smash at The Barrel House.

Speaking of drinks, we are sure a lot of crafting went into this one! They call it the “Silly Rabbit” at The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. It’s a natural Ethiopian cold brew made with panela (an unrefined whole cane sugar), Trix cereal-infused oat milk and Trix cereal (of course). It’s available until June 1.

Indulge this Mother’s Day — or all month long — in the Oh My Cupcakes flavors of the month. Triple Berry Delight is moist vanilla almond cupcake, filled with a homemade triple berry compote, topped with a rich cream cheese frosting and finished with a strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. And Randy’s Chocolate Razz is a chocolate cupcake with raspberry filling, topped with raspberry buttercream and a layer of rich dark chocolate ganache and garnished with a sweet raspberry.

And finally, you know you’ve arrived when you make it on the Sioux Falls Wall of Notability at Sunny’s Pizzeria. The next to be added will be longtime Dakota News Now meteorologist Phil Schreck. Look for artist Wyatt Dickson to add him to the mural by early this fall.

Changes in hours, service

Cellar 54 has new hours beginning Saturday: noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Also on Saturdays, starting this weekend, get $5 mimosas from 10 a.m. to noon and $20 wine flights from noon to 4 p.m.
