Restaurant Roundup: Parents Day at Squealer’s, favorite returns at Taco Bell

Celebrate the return of kids in school with the annual Parents Day party at Squealer’s Smoke Shack. The restaurant in Tea with a full liquor license will open at 9 a.m. Wednesday with food and drink specials. Squealer’s also is collecting and giving out school supplies to anyone in need who comes in before Wednesday. Anything that hasn’t been taken by the first day of school will be donated to the Tea Area School District.

The Original Pancake House is trying to make the back-to-school transition easier. Teachers, support staff and students get 50 percent off the regular-priced menu from 6 to 8 a.m. weekdays until Aug. 31. The offer is good for dine-in or to-go orders.

After voting by fans, Taco Bell put the Beefy Crunch Burrito back on the menu for a limited time. It beat out Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos for a special place on the menu. The Beefy Crunch Burrito was introduced in 2010, dropped the following year and then made limited runs before disappearing in 2018. It has seasoned beef, Fritos Flamin’ Hot corn chips, seasoned rice, sour cream and nacho cheese sauce.

New cat cafe leads to new homes for featured felines

The Wine Bar at Allure has a new food menu, keeping the focus on light bites. There are sharables, including a revamped charcuterie board, tapas and crostinis. It also has new weekly specials: Tuesday, buy one domestic beer and get a second for half-price; Wednesday, 10 percent off tuna sashimi; Thursday, half-price pretzel bites; Friday, buy one crostini dish and get a second for 20 percent off; and Saturday, mimosa flights for $25.

The regular menu at 22Ten Kitchen Cocktails has a few additions. Muffin Top Salad features blueberry muffin croutons, and Lettuce Wraps include chicken, veggies, fried rice noodles and scallion caramel soy sauce on romaine hearts. There’s also a monte cristo sandwich, Oscar-Topped Ribeye and a Walleye Signature Dinner of lightly dusted and grilled walleye with parmesan butter roasted root vegetables, honey and charred lemon. For dessert, there’s a new Chocolate Brownie Souffle and a Turtle Tiramisu.

The monthly features at R Wine Bar & Kitchen for August doubled up on desserts. There’s a key lime cheesecake and banana split creme brulee. The featured entree is a swordfish steak pan-seared with garlic compound butter and served with chimichurri, lemon, micro baby carrots and tomato confit red quinoa.

Here’s the latest dinner menu from M.B. Haskett Delicatessen. In addition to seating inside, the downtown restaurant features patios in the front and back. Dinner hours are 3:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. It’s also open for breakfast and lunch every day except for Monday.

Sinless Sweets, which closed its storefront last month and returned to custom orders and online sales, is having a pizza night Friday. Place orders by noon for pickup in the evening. Owner Maggy Pickner is offering three gluten-free, vegan offerings in two sizes. Place orders at sinlesssweetssf.com. 

Highball is having another Dog Days of Summer party on Aug. 17. Bring your dog, and hang out at the cocktail bar on East Eighth Street from 4 to 9 p.m. Chef Michael Charpentier of The Treasury is making tacos. A portion of the proceeds from the food sales will go the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

En Place Catering will be selling barbecued smoked wings for The Hello Hi’s Howdy Hey party Aug. 17. Serving starts at 4 p.m. There will be featured cocktails, a best-dressed contest, and Thomas Hentges will DJ with country music from 7 to 11 p.m.

If you’re a fan of sour beers, Lupulin Brewing Co. is celebrating Sour Summer Work Week from Monday through Aug. 17. Each day features brews from its Scribbled Lines with lots of “funky infusions” and a special flight. Buy a Scribbled Lines beer every day to earn a T-shirt. Hours are 3 to 10 p.m.

Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant has a couple of special dinners coming up this month. On Wednesday, Tango and Champagne will offer dancing, and on Aug. 23, Chef Omar Thornton will make a guest appearance with a four-course meal and drink pairings. The South Dakota on the Table menu from the former owner of “O” So Good in Garretson will feature walleye, hearty soup, buffalo burger and Black Angus steak. Changes in hours, service

  • The Cookie Jar Eatery has adjusted hours for the next two days. Friday, only lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, the restaurant will be closed.
  • Pinz in Dell Rapids will reopen at 11 a.m. Friday after closing July 28 for a renovation project that focused on the restaurant rather than the bowling alley.
