Restaurant Roundup: Halloween treats, wine flights, free tacos, new menus

Oct. 28, 2021

Get into the “spirit” of Halloween at JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars and The Boozy Bakery. They’ve concocted “blood bag cocktails,” and the bakery case is filled with decorated treats.

The International “Haunted” House of Pancakes is serving free scary face pancakes for kids 12 and younger from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. It’s served with whipped topping eyes and a smile and comes with a side of mini Oreo cookies, glazed strawberries and candy corn for decorating. Adults and teens can enjoy festive meals like the Monster Mummy Burrito or Reese’s Pieces Pancakes.

A transplanted Minnesotan is taking advantage of her move to Sioux Falls to turn her side gig into her full-time business. Andrea Willems has started Andrea’s Bake Shop, which specializes in custom decorated sugar cookies. Willems followed her fiance, Adam Schlee, here for his dream job as a flight nurse for Avera Careflight. She previously worked on a hospital surgery team and decided to pursue her dream of opening a bakery. For now, she’s operating the business out of their home while looking for commercial kitchen space to use. “Eventually, I’d like to open my own shop or have a mobile cookie truck that could go to events and festivals.” She’ll make her public debut Saturday at the Brandon Farmers Market. Most of her work is for for gatherings such as baby showers and bachelorette parties. A new edible ink printer will help the bakery expand into corporate orders, she said.

East-side wine shop Celllar 54 will start offering wine flights on Saturdays. Try four wines – either a red flight or a white flight – for $12. It’s open from noon to 7 p.m. in a retail center on the east side of Dawley Farm Village. The wine flights are available until 6 p.m.

Second baseman Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves stole a base in the first game of the World Series, so that means Taco Bell is giving away free Doritos Locos Tacos on Nov. 4. Get the Steal a Taco details here.

The new winter menu at Urban Chislic features a Chicago “hottt” dog that’s simmered in Rack XXX sauce – the hottest sauce available — and sprinkled with Carolina Reaper dry rub seasoning. Other additions include chili, chili cheese fries, fried sweet potatoes, wontons and the Sting Ring, onion rings loaded with Bone Dust and Reaper dry rubs. Four seasonal sauces also are available for all menu items: sriracha aioli, yum yum sauce, Sweet Hot Pumpkin Pie and Blue Devil with blueberries, maple syrup, molasses, tomato sauce, ghost peppers and seasoning.

Sickies Garage has a new feature menu that’s inspired by the bacon cheeseburger. It works as an egg roll filling, queso, soup in a bread bowl, loaded fries or totchos topping and as a deep-fried “bomb.”

With the success of its restaurant and catering, Chef Lance’s on Phillips has changed its family meal service. Instead of take-and-bake meals, hot platters that serve five to six people can be picked up from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the downtown restaurant. Soup also is available. Meals, which will rotate, must be ordered online at least one day in advance. To kick off the change, save $10 off a platter with the code “Family.”

Intoxibakes, which celebrates its fourth anniversary Nov. 1, has added a second display case, which means there’s more room for alcohol-infused baked goods and the nonboozy treats. Each has its own case now, making it easier for customers to know the difference between the options. The bakery in downtown’s Jones421 Building has added cream puffs along with more bars and muffins. New boozy product line items include cake pops, Irish cream brownies and mini rum cakes.

La Luna Cafe is featuring four drinks for fall. There’s a pumpkin chai; lavender London Fog; Strawberry Field with chamomile tea, strawberry puree and steamed oat milk; and an apple cider steamer that’s sweetened with dulce de leche and topped with whipped cream. And just to note: Pumpkin spice lattes are available year-round.

Lupulin Brewing Co. is hosting a trunk-or-treat contest at 1 p.m. Saturday. Patrons can decorate the trunk of their vehicle and pass out candy in Lupulin’s parking lot. The best decorated trunk will win a $50 brewery gift card, and second place will earn a $25 gift card. Wear a costume and enjoy two beers for the price of one or buy a beer and get a soda for your kid.

On the Hook is back in Sioux Falls from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Tractor Supply Co. on North Cliff Avenue. Get ready to pay a little more. The traveling food truck company said inflation is leading it to raise prices for the first time in its five-year history. The standard three-piece wild Alaskan cod meal that comes with fries will be $13 instead of $12.

Changes in service, hours

With Blarney Stone Pub back to a full staff, the “Underground” has reopened. The lower-level space, which is limited to the 21-and-older crowd, is open from 9 p.m. to close Friday and Saturday.
