Restaurant Roundup: Harry Potter ‘sorting’ cupcakes, Chicken Big Mac

Oct. 10, 2024

Sugar Palace by Emily in Harrisburg has Harry Potter sorting cupcakes through Halloween. Each cupcake in the set of four has a different house color hidden inside. They’re available in the case, or customers can order them to ensure availability.

Today is the debut of the new limited-time Chicken Big Mac at McDonald’s. It’s the same sandwich as the Big Mac but with two tempura-battered chicken patties instead of two all-beef patties.

Flyboy Donuts has expanded its menu to include Rocket Dogs — also known as pigs in a blanket or Texas kolaches. They’re sweet dough wrapped around cheddar wurst or queso sausage.

Jack Rose Social Club has a seasonal food menu that could be enjoyed as a four-course meal or lighter bites.

The recently renamed restaurant, formerly known as Tavern 180, also has a featured cocktail menu with a color-changing Magic Potion Margarita, s’mores-topped espresso martini, Boozy Butterbeer and Campfire Mule.

Nine Brandon-area restaurants are competing in the annual Brandon Pizza Battle that runs until the end of the month. Entries include Pizza Ranch with Tuscany Chicken, Double D Saloon with Macho Nacho, 212 — The Boiling Point with That’s My Jam, Bottom’s Up with The Fajita-tude, Tailgators Grill & Bar with The CompleteZA, The Gruff Plates + Pours with Cajun Persuasion, Kingbird Coffee with I Want S’more dessert pizza, A Homestead Brew with Farmer’s Luau and Chud’s Pub & Grub with Elotes Pork Pizza. Find details on the pizza and how to vote at brandonvalleychamber.com. The Gruff is the defending champion.

Buffalo Trading Post west of Colton has new daily lunch specials. The only one that’s locked in is hot beef sandwiches on Saturdays. Other specials include comfort food dishes like chicken fried steak, chicken pot pie over mashed potatoes, Salisbury steak, beef stroganoff and baked spaghetti. The longtime gathering spot for locals and hunters is closed on Mondays now until spring. The kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The bar is open later, depending on traffic.

The traveling vegan junk food truck, Vuture Food, is making a third appearance in Sioux Falls this season. It will be at Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Crispy Chik’n sandwiches and loaded fries will be on the menu. The patties are made with soy, wheat and peas.

Another traveling food truck will be in town Saturday. On the Hook Fish and Chips will be at the west-side Menards parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Lucky’s on Louise has new happy hour specials. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Famous Dave’s has limited-time menu items featuring a new sauce: Korean Sweet Heat. Items include smoked brisket egg rolls, hand-breaded chicken strips, traditional wings and baby back ribs. They’re available through Nov. 10.

Check out the food and drink specials for October at Tailgators Grill & Bar in Brandon.

The pizza of the month at Invictus Pizza Kitchen is Perfect Pesto. It has a light garlic butter and basil pesto sauce, mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, ground beef, cherry tomatoes and spinach.

Coffee Toffee Crunch is the newest pop-up flavor at Nothing Bundt Cakes. It’s available through Oct. 20.

IHOP’s pancake of the month is Reese’s Pieces.

Breadsmith’s gourmet cookies of the month for October are pumpkin chocolate chip, honey cornbread, chocolate chip walnut and apple cranberry ginger. They’re available Fridays and Saturdays.

After almost daily questions of “Do you have pumpkin spice?” The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. has made Yes, We Have Pumpkin Spice as one of its featured drinks for October. The latte is made with real pumpkin, white mocha, raw sugar and fresh sage. Apple *sigh* Der  is straight apple cider from Hoversten Orchard north of Brandon. “The original idea was to use it in a drink, but after sampling it, decided it should be left it in its unadulterated state of perfection,” the coffee shop wrote in a social media post. “This is tart and unfiltered and nuanced — not too sweet — the essence of apple.” High praise!

The Marg of the Month at Chili’s Grill & Bar has a spooky vibe for Halloween. The green, Granny Smith apple-flavored The Witches Brew is available for $6.

Here’s another drink for the month – this one nonalcoholic – with another vibrant color for Halloween. The Spooktober Boba Blender at Juice Stop features mango and pineapple juices, orange sherbet and peach boba.

Here are the October drink specials at Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery.
