New shuttle service offers stops from Sioux Falls to Sioux City

Nov. 1, 2019

A new shuttle service provides 24/7 service between Sioux Falls and Sioux City with stops in Beresford and Vermillion.

Ryan King of Vermillion started Stampede Shuttle in October.

“The schedule is designed to get the first flight out of Sioux Falls at 5 a.m., hit peak times for commuters and get the last flight out of Sioux Falls,” King said.

The service uses four transit-passenger vehicles that could hold 12 people, but King has designed the seating for eight to give travelers more room. Customers have the option of selecting their seat when they book a trip. The vans offer on-board 4G Wi-Fi, so commuters and students can use the travel time to work or study, King said.

Airports in each city serve as the end points for the route. There are stops at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Sioux City, the Coffee Cup Travel Plaza at the Vermillion exit for I-29, the USD Muenster University Center in Vermillion and the Truck Towne Plaza at the Beresford exit. In Sioux Falls, there are stops at The Empire Mall and hospitals for the VA, Sanford and Avera.

Customers can book trips at stampedeshuttle.com. A one-way trip between the two airports is $27 and takes about three hours. Going from The Empire Mall to USD is $15. Commuters can buy a monthly pass with unlimited travel.

“There’s a lot of traffic coming up in to Sioux Falls,” King said. “There’s also a lot of demand to connect into Yankton, and from Sioux Falls to Brookings. This will develop into a wagon-wheel system eventually.”

King also envisions a route to Omaha.

The idea for the shuttle service stemmed from his own needs. King, who served as an artillery officer in the Marines for 15 years, moved to Vermillion from the East Coast to attend medical school. He was traveling to Sioux Falls several times a week for school and to catch flights to Florida to be with his father, who has dementia.

Because of his father’s illness, he was able to step away from medical school and decided to start Stampede Shuttle.

If the demand for the shuttle service isn’t there, King said he has the opportunity to return to medical school without reapplying.

“I want to give this a shot to see how my entrepreneurial skills are. I want to see how this goes.”
