New kids resale shop coming to Western Mall

Sept. 22, 2023

Kid to Kid, a national children’s resale retailer, is expanding to Sioux Falls.

Alexa Goodroad is franchising the business locally and discovered it shortly after her daughter was born early last year.

“It didn’t take long for me to realize the need for such a store in my hometown of Sioux Falls,” she said. “My husband and I, along with our 8-month-old daughter, took a road trip across the country to visit many K2K stores. We fell in love with the concept and knew it would be a great fit for our community.”

Kid to Kid buys gently used children’s clothing, toys and baby gear and resells it. Items are appraised on the spot, and customers can choose a cash payout or 20 percent more in trade.

“By selling your gently used items to Kid to Kid, you not only earn some cash but also contribute to a more sustainable future,” Goodroad said. “Kid to Kid stores are designed to be upscale and highly organized. Items are carefully selected and then sorted by size, style and color-coordinated for an easy shopping experience.”

There are more than 110 locations across 24 states and in several countries.

The Sioux Falls store will lease more than 6,300 square feet at the Western Mall, on the southwest corner of 41st Street and Western Avenue, in a space next to Carpet One.

“The Western Mall’s high foot traffic and family-oriented atmosphere provide the perfect customer base,” said Bobbie Tibbetts of Bender Commercial Real Estate Services, who represented the tenant. “Kid to Kid allows for another strong retailer at the mall, complementing the mall’s existing tenant mix and enhancing the mall’s diversity.”

The Western Mall only has two spaces available — a 1,400-square-foot office and a 775-square-foot space that could be retail or office. Both are accessed from inside the mall.

The Kid to Kid space, which is on the north side of the mall, had been a loan production office for a mortgage company and has had some kind of office use for the past decade.

“The Western Mall is very excited to see this space be rejuvenated as retail. It has spent many years as a quality office location, but with the outstanding visibility from mall patrons coming off of 41st Street and the neighboring retailers in the mall, it really is a fantastic set up for Kid to Kid to thrive in,” said Isaac Jorgensen of Bender Commercial, who co-represents the property with Reggie Kuipers.

“The Western Mall has done a great job keeping rents and expenses very competitive compared to similarly sized spaces around town. I don’t expect these turn-key spaces to be vacant for very long.”

The current timeline suggests Kid to Kid will be ready to start purchasing items for resale early next year ahead of a spring opening, Goodroad said.

“We will be purchasing over 40,000 items in a three-month span in preparation for our grand opening,” she said.

She has the background for it, though. Her career has been in retail, and she operates vendor booths at Gift & Thrift and Stacey’s Vintage-Art-Boutique.

With Kid to Kid, Goodroad said she thinks the timing is right.

“With cost of living on the rise, more and more people are embracing the concept of buying second-hand items,” she said. “We strive to become a trusted and sought-after destination for parents and caretakers alike.”
