A pet supply store specializing in fresh, all-natural food for dogs and cats has opened in south Sioux Falls.

The Pet Wants franchise is owned by Tea dentist Melissa Brandner, who owns four dogs and also raises chickens and horses. While she was scheduled to open Pet Wants in Sioux Falls last year, she opted for a pop-up shop in Tea first because of the pandemic.

The new location, which is open daily, is along 85th Street west of Minnesota Avenue in a retail center that also includes Scooter’s Coffee and Pizza Hut. Pets are welcome inside and can sample treats to see what they like.

The business is known for its pet food, which does not use corn, soy, wheat, byproducts, preservatives or dyes. At a self-serve station, shoppers can buy as much dry food as they want.

The shop also features dried raw products such as chicken feet, cows’ ears and sweet potato wrapped in chicken.

“We’re about as natural as you can get unless you’re making it yourself,” Brandner said.

There’s a selection of durable American-made toys, plus training treats, leashes and natural supplements. A few items are even made in the Sioux Falls area.

Pet spa products are made from natural ingredients, and there’s a mosquito and tick repellant spray that uses essential oils instead of chemicals.

Pet owners can pay to use one of two raised wash bays, including one for larger dogs with a step stool so owners don’t have to lift them.

While much of the merchandise is focused on dogs, there also are items for cats.

Hours for the store at 7740 S. Dakota Hawk Ave., are 11 am. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Free delivery is offered within a 20-mile radius.
