Rapid City’s first ClubHouse Hotel & Suites has opened, offering area travelers a new hotel option conveniently located to major employment centers.

The four-story, 90-room hotel opened recently at 1920 Hope Court, off Mount Rushmore Road and Catron Boulevard.

“It’s a beautiful hotel,” said Josh Schmaltz, president and CEO of The Ramkota Companies, which owns and operates the property.

“You know you’re in a ClubHouse when you walk into the big two-story lobby and Great Room.”

As a brand, the ClubHouse was created by Sioux Falls-based Ramkota 20 years ago and has grown to four locations: Sioux Falls, Pierre, Fargo and now Rapid City.

“As guests and expectations change, we’ve been able to take it up a step,” Schmaltz said. “We’ve always changed things as we’ve evolved the properties, and with this one, we designed floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful views of the Black Hills and very large rooms. Even a standard king room has a couch, so they’re spacious.”

The ClubHouse marks The Ramkota Companies’ third property in Rapid City. Its longtime Best Western Ramkota Hotel has served the market since 1999, and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites became part of Ramkota’s portfolio in late 2021.

With the ClubHouse, Ramkota offers an option that’s ideal for corporate travelers, Schmaltz said.

“The location is extremely convenient, close to Black Hills Energy and multiple health care centers, including Monument Health, the Veterans Administration clinic right next door and now Sanford Health since it expanded to the Black Hills,” he said. “We built it to generate more year-round hospitality activity in addition to serving the destination tourism market.”

The hotel was built by Rapid City-based Scull Construction Service.

“I think it’s a great product,” president Andy Scull said. “It’s got a good mix of different kinds of rooms that are well suited to the business traveler, for a short extended stay, and it also accommodates the family environment well.”

The location and design are a good fit for the market, he added.

“It’s an area that lacks high-end product but draws a lot of business travelers,” Scull said.

“This is my favorite ClubHouse because of how they’ve modernized it in the colors and materials throughout the common space as well as the rooms. With every project, they’re looking to see how they can improve it from the last, and they’ve done a good job raising the game to a more modern look.”

The hotel provides flexible meeting space for businesses, sports teams and events, with the capacity to host up to 80 guests for a wedding.

“We easily can set up for a banquet, classroom or conference,” Schmaltz said. “We think it’s going to bring a nice additional option for groups to the market.”

An indoor pool and fitness center will help guests stay active, while a complimentary manager’s reception offered Monday through Thursday evenings provides entertainment with snacks, beer and wine.

The final phase of construction will add a full-service restaurant next to the property: Wild Sage Kitchen & Cocktails, developed and managed by WR Hospitality and scheduled to open later this month.

Sioux Falls-based WR Hospitality has partnered with Ramkota on restaurants within several hotel properties and also owns and operates 22Ten Kitchen & Cocktails, All Day Cafe, TapHouse 41 and the Phillips Avenue Diner in Sioux Falls.

“It’s a hybrid concept of several of their restaurants – definitely an American grill but a little higher-end with a fun atmosphere,” Schmaltz said.

That’s a welcome addition to Rapid City, too, said Scull, whose company is building it as well.

“When I have people coming to Rapid City on business, they’re looking to go somewhere more lively to have dinner and drinks close to where they’re visiting,” he said. “This restaurant is turning out awesome. WR Hospitality has always done a great job on food and beverage, and this is going to be extremely popular not just with visitors but with the local crowd.”
