Mexican restaurant to close, hopes to reopen next year

Dec. 21, 2022

A Mexican restaurant that opened six months ago on the east side of downtown is closing at the end of the month, noting that it hopes to come back sometime next year.

Eric Nunez and partners started T-Juanita Street Food and Cheladas in June in the former Jacky’s Restaurant building at 702 E. Eighth St.

In a Facebook post earlier this month, the restaurant, which features the flavors of Tijuana, alerted customers to the upcoming closure.

“After six months of great success, we’ve decided to close down T-Juanita Street Food and Cheladas. … Unfortunately, being a small business is harder to stay open and compete with big chains, food prices, payroll, rent and keep prices low, not to mention workers not willing to work, etc., etc.

“We understand the first years of a business are the hardest; that’s why we’ve decided to take a break starting next month — Jan. 1, 2023 — hoping to come back sometime next year stronger than ever.”

Nunez did not return messages seeking additional information about the possibility of reopening next year.

The restaurant was closed Tuesday for inventory and has reopened, continuing with several specials, including $2.50 tacos and lunch meals for $8.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
