Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Amazon will open its new Sioux Falls fulfillment center later than planned, but the e-commerce giant isn’t saying how much later. The 3-million-square-foot facility at Foundation Park is expected to employ 1,000 workers. It was about 95 percent done with construction in February when community and business leaders toured it. At that time, it was waiting on conveyor systems and other equipment that were expected to be installed in the next 90 days.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers has broken ground on its second Sioux Falls restaurant. This one will be on the campus of The Empire Mall on vacant land south of Burger King on Louise Avenue. It’s scheduled to open late this year or early in 2023.

Fazoli’s is coming to the east side of Sioux Falls. The nation’s largest Italian quick-service restaurant chain is planning to build on the north side of Arrowhead Parkway across the street from Aldi. The restaurant is expected to open in late fall.

T-Juanita Street Food and Cheladas has opened in the former Jacky’s Restaurant building at 702 E. Eighth St. Many of the menu items feature the flavors of Tijuana, including Baja-style street tacos and shrimp entrees. A Mexican lunch buffet is served on weekdays. It’s open daily.

The newest restaurant in downtown’s Jones421 Building on North Phillips Avenue offers a taco bar with customizable options for tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas and nachos. Flying Santo features the flavors of northern Mexico cuisine and a masked Mexican wresting theme. Tortillas are made fresh with each order. To start, it’s open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday and brunch on the weekend.

A Hispanic grocery store will fill the former Andy’s Affiliated Foods location on Cleveland Avenue north of 18th Street. El Mexicano No. 7 might be ready to open in August, owner Efrain Patino said.

Fareway plans to build a grocery store in Brandon. The Iowa-based chain bought land on the northeast corner of Holly and Lancer. A timeline for opening has not been announced.

The Paisley Pod in Brandon has closed. Owner Chrystal Rothenberger is focusing on her blog, Wildly You, which includes tips and stories about parenting, style, travel, health and wellness, in addition to organizing events such as yoga and hiking.

Pandora is back to selling jewelry at The Empire Mall. The store is open in a space next to Sephora and White House Black Market. Pandora first came to the mall in 2015 and closed in 2020.

The clinic and IV club are open at Allure Health, and soon a fitness center and bar are scheduled to join them. The unique multiuse building along South Minnesota Avenue at 7000 S. Lyncrest Place is wrapping up construction with the hope of being done sometime in July. Storm Clinic has relocated, expanded and rebranded at Allure.

A group of friends who met playing pool are planning to open a billiards hall on the east side. Rack City Billiards will be at 309 S. Bahnson Ave. The plan also is to offer darts to start and potentially expand with sand volleyball and bean bags outside. It will offer daytime open play and practice time, with tables rented by the hour. Weeknights likely will host league play, and weekends could host tournaments. The hope is to be open by early September.

SuFu Tractor will offer dance parties on a trailer pulled by a tractor through downtown Sioux Falls. The trailer is outfitted with benches, a DJ stand, a bar with a full liquor license and a lighted dance floor. The owners are booking rides to start in  August.

Beth Thompson has expanded her home interiors business to include a retail storefront at 121 E. Fifth St. in Canton. Heartland Spaces Market’s merchandise includes home furnishings and decor, art, apparel, accessories and gift items. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday.

Anytime Fitness has opened at 111 N. Main St. in Canton. It offers 24/7 access.

A Taste of New Orleans has expanded from catering to include a food truck. It’s based in a parking lot at 10th and Bahnson and features recipes that have been handed down through eight generations. A simple menu of jambalaya and po’ boy sandwiches will be expanded as the business grows, owner Felichia Cottrell said.

The Community College for Sioux Falls on North Career Avenue has been renamed USD – Sioux Falls. The University of South Dakota plans to emphasize degree offerings in health care, business and education.

An expansion that more than doubles the amount of hospitality housing for patients and families at Avera McKennan has opened. The addition to Kirby Place offers 14 patient rooms on the Walsh Family Village campus, which is near Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center.

Cheezy Noodlez Gourmet Mac & Cheese has started operations. The food truck owned by Jessica Eck and her husband, Johnny Than, made its debut June 15 and has been busy since then serving lunch at parking lots across town. The couple posts their schedule at the beginning of the week on the Cheezy Noodlez Facebook page. The menu includes mac-and-cheese with toppings such as birria, smoked pulled pork, buffalo chicken, barbecue chicken and smoked bratwurst.

Starbucks has opened two coffee shops in Sioux Falls in the past week. One is in a retail center in front of Walmart at 85th and Minnesota. It offers indoor seating and a drive-thru. The other location is the first on the west side of Interstate 29. The stand-alone site is at 41st and Ellis in the Westown Marketplace development. It has indoor and patio seating and a drive-thru.

The Salas Salsas food truck made its debut last weekend. Marcela Salas and her mother, Patricia Burbine, started selling salsas and take-and-bake tamales and enchiladas at the Brandon Farmers Market in 2020. “With the food truck, we don’t plan on having a set menu,” Salas said. “We want to let our creative flag fly.” They’ll post locations on the Salas Salsas Facebook page.
