Your taste buds can take a trip around the world without ever leaving downtown Sioux Falls thanks to the latest menu just unveiled at Wine Time on Main.

The wine bar on Main Avenue across from the Washington Pavilion still offers a massive list of almost 200 wines, which are all available by the glass to drink or to take home by the bottle. And this fall’s menu additions now give you even more reasons to stop in and try something new.

“We made changes based on our customer feedback and think our guests are going to love the new additions,” owner Bob Novak said. “Some are customer favorites and other expand on regions of the world where our guests are looking to try something new.”

Here’s a first look at some of the new offerings.

Spanish specialties

Sioux Falls wine lovers want to try more from Spain, Novak said. And Wine Time is delivering.

“Spain has more acres of grapes planted than any country in the world,” he said. “They’re No. 1. And they’re super-reasonably priced. They’re excellent wines for the money.”

Wine Time now offers several unique Spanish wines, including a 2005 “we think will be a hit on the wine list,” Novak said. “To get a Spanish Reserva, it has to be at least 5 years old before they release it, so they have a lot of bottle age. They’re for those who love Old World wines. If you like French and Italian, you’re going to love Spanish.”

French flair

And speaking of French wines, Wine Time added some new ones to the menu.

From the Rhone Valley, there’s a 2015 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Terres Brulees Syrah with structured notes of black fruit, herbs, white pepper and blueberry, along with a 2013 Jean-Luc Colombo Hermitage Le Rouet Rouge Syrah with red currant, red cherry, clove and a long finish.

“They are classic, Old World French wines, a lot of earth and mineral,” Novak said. “They’re awesome food wines, so try them with our cheese and charcuterie.”

Another recommendation: the Rothschild wines from Bordeaux.

“That’s an amazing wine by an excellent producer with a great reputation,” Novak said. “It’s a super-reasonable price point. We’re moving the white and the red blend from the feature list to our permanent menu because customers have really been enjoying them this summer.”

Italian options

New additions on the Italian side of the menu include a 2016 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia, named a 100-point wine this year.

“It’s super, super hard to get,” Novak said. “There were only four six-packs of that allowed into the state, we think, and we felt lucky to get nine bottles.”

The red blend from Bolgheri, Italy, offers layers of blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herbs and barbecue spice.

“It’s a blend that breaks all the rules of Italy,” Novak said. “It is bright with a super-long finish. When you take a drink of that wine, it will stay in your mouth for five minutes. It’s insane.”

If you’re looking for another new Italian option, consider the 2015 Pio Cesare Barbera d’Alba. From Piedmont, it’s plummy with spice and ripe fruit, blackberry aroma and a hint of tobacco.

“It’s a light-bodied wine and really easy to drink, like a Pinot Noir,” Novak said. “It’s a great, different grape from a different region of Italy.”

Fun and frugal

And we had to share these bottles with you, too, for the win-win at Wine Time. It’s the Caricature Cabernet and Chardonnay, California-based wines whose labels deliver a fun first impression and whose prices will leave you smiling.

“These will probably be our most affordable Cab and Chardonnay,” Novak said. “The pricing was so good it was hard not to buy it, and I really liked them once I tried them.”
