Longtime children’s consignment shop to close

Jan. 20, 2023

Longtime children’s consignment shop Kids & Kaboodle Children’s Shop is closing.

The store at 1700 W. 33rd St. has been in business since April 1991.

“I always kept it small, and that has been beneficial to my customer community,” said owner Wendy Haugen, who became intrigued with the idea of running a kids consignment shop after experiencing one out of state.

Through her decades running Kids & Kaboodle, it has become “a generational business, and that’s what makes it harder on the families and on me and on the employees.”

While she said she loves running the business, an escalation in her rent was too much to overcome.

“We were crunching numbers until the cows came home, and it wasn’t viable,” she said.

Her lease expires March 31, and until then or inventory runs out, the doors will be open for shopping. The store is no longer taking new items on consignment, but “we still have a good selection in most sizes and a variety of toys and books,” Haugen said.

The fixtures, racks and shelving also are for sale.

The neighborhood location has “always been a very welcoming place,” Haugen said. “I have consignments and customers from all income brackets, all backgrounds.”

As they’ve come in for final shopping trips, there have been a lot of tears, she said.

“They’ve all been very supportive and very encouraging,” she said. “Everybody’s in shock.”

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
