Liquor store opens in former VFW

A package liquor store with a video-lottery casino and a second one to come has opened in south-central Sioux Falls.
49th Street Liquor, owned by Rapid City-based M.G. Oil, is in the former VFW building at the intersection with Minnesota Avenue.

While the company’s Corner Pantry stores sell packaged liquor, this is its first full liquor store in Sioux Falls, manager Aaron Paulson said.
“We have everything,” Paulson said. “Our wine section is quite large. We’ve got pretty much every type of wine that you could want.”

For spirits, there are whiskeys, bourbons and vodkas, and “we have a pretty good Scotch selection,” Paulson said.

The store features a walk-in beer cave, and there’s a 10-door cooler for six-packs and “tall boys” of beer and four-packs of seltzers.

The seltzer lineup includes the new THC-based Gigli out of Minnesota.

“They’re like 10 milligrams each, but they’re really tasty,” Paulson said. “They don’t taste bad or oily. They have a good flavor to them. They’re like a really good seltzer, (but) like a mocktail. They’re considered a nonalcoholic beverage.”
Near the center part of the store, a small freezer and a cooler are stocked with Dakota Butcher steaks, beef sticks and summer sausage.

Shelves hold salty snacks, and there are pickled goods for making bloody marys.

Near the front counter, there are cigars, cigarettes and delta-8 THC products.

The liquor store includes a video lottery casino with 10 machines and a second one that is expected to open sometime this month with another 10 machines.
Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
M.G. Oil owns the building, which includes a separate 777 Casino that it owns. Genesis Farms leases space for its medical marijuana dispensary, and there are two vacant spots for other tenants. Those have drawn considerable interest, said Lindy Sweeden, regional retail general manager for M.G. Oil.
With the building’s large parking lot, 49th Street Liquor is hosting a car, truck and UTV meet-up every Thursday night through October.
