Find new flavors, hours as Falls Overlook Cafe reopens

April 2, 2018

Falls Overlook Cafe opens today for the season with a few new menu items and a change in hours.

The cafe on the east side of the Big Sioux River at Falls Park won’t be open this year in the evening. Owner Rhonda Milstead said she’s hoping to book more private events such as wedding receptions, anniversary and birthday parties, and corporate events.

Until Memorial Day weekend, Falls Overlook Cafe will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Starting May 26, it also will be open those same hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Several new sandwiches will appear on the menu. There’s a pulled pork sandwich with an Asian coleslaw and The Big Peach, a ham and brie sandwich with peach jam and maple bacon aioli. Milstead also is adding a roast beef sandwich with a sweet cream horseradish spread that “could be eaten as a dessert,” she said.

A new salad will feature mini heads of romaine, sliced apples, mandarin oranges, Gorgonzola, candied pecans and a Caribbean mango vinaigrette dressing.

The cafe is known for its rotating selection of made-from-scratch soups, and Milstead is adding a Thai coconut shrimp version on Fridays.

The popular hand-dipped Land O’Lakes ice cream will return, and Milstead plans to have other daily dessert choices. “Those will rotate and depend on what will feel like making. … Many will feature fresh berries.”

She’d still like to hire a couple of people to work in the kitchen and a few staff members 21 or older so they can serve beer and wine at the evening events.
