Event business owner: ‘Every day in the planning world is an adventure’

March 28, 2023

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Loghin Welch, co-owner and lead planner at Serendipitous Events.

Name: Loghin Welch

Age: 28

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. My mom is from Sioux Falls, and my dad is from Parkston, South Dakota. They met in college and after graduating decided to plant their roots in Sioux Falls, and they never left.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

I love the sense of community that Sioux Falls provides. It is the perfect-size city and offers many opportunities for personal growth and starting or growing a business. Our city is growing at a rapid speed. It is so much fun to experience new restaurants, cocktail bars and breweries, shops and boutiques and the extensive list of outdoor activities that our city has to offer.

After graduating from O’Gorman High School in 2012, I left for college in Mankato, Minnesota. I knew I wanted to end up in Sioux Falls shortly after moving away. I graduated in three years and moved back the day I graduated, and I have no regrets! I love living near my parents, and I am extremely lucky that much of my large extended family live here as well.  I like to call Sioux Falls a “big, small town.” It’s not often I can go out and about without running into someone I know, which I love!

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love my job as an event planner. I can actually say I never dread going to work or having a really long, tiring event day. My favorite part about my job is the connections I get to make every day. Whether that is a client becoming a friend or getting to meet a new vendor to work with, I am always meeting and surrounded by great people.

Our team at Serendipitous Events is made up of some of the most creative, positive, fun and outgoing gals I have ever had the privilege of working with. They help to make every day in the planning world an adventure, which helps ensure no event is ever the same.

How did you get connected to your industry?

As crazy as it sounds, my high school experience on the spinsters committee is what got me connected to Serendipitous Events. My now business partner and founder of Serendipitous Events, Jessica, came and spoke at one of our high school planning meetings. At the time, I had zero idea that I would become an event planner. That changed when I went to college. I immediately became submerged in the event planning world. I was the president of our student events team on campus, and I loved it! I knew right away I wanted to make a career out of events. When I needed an internship, I knew exactly who I was going to call: Jessica!  After my summer internship with Serendipitous Events, my career fell into place.

Describe your workplace in three words.

Energetic, passionate, dedicated.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I’m not as “girly girl” as most may think. I grew up on an acreage, and I still love being in the country as much as I can. Fishing, hunting and being on the river have always been my favorite hobbies.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I enjoy volunteering when I can. I am on the Teddy Bear Den board of directors and really enjoy giving my time to such a great nonprofit. It is extremely rewarding to see firsthand how a local nonprofit is changing the lives of moms and babies in our community every single day. I love to donate my time to help with events or throwing an event for someone deserving when I have time as well.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Hash Kitchen! I LOVE a good brunch, and the vibe that Hash provides is so fun and upbeat.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

This is a hard question because I love the event industry so much. I personally would love to invest in properties that couples could use as Airbnbs and a destination spot for bachelorette parties. I’d love to host guests and have “Instagram-worthy” homes across the U.S.
