Dell Rapids woman opens temporary ‘free store’ for the community

Dec. 17, 2025

A woman from Dell Rapids has turned her passion into purpose with a community project through the end of the month.

Allie Miller saw the “free store” concept on TikTok a few years ago and has wanted to try it ever since.

“It’s a thrift store where you can donate what you don’t need anymore, and instead of selling it, I give it away,” Miller said.

The pieces just fell into place because Miller had access to a space with about 1,000 square feet for a short time.

Her mom, who owned a building in Dell Rapids for eight years, decided to sell this year.

“She had an auction on Nov. 22, and the building would sit empty until January, so I asked her if I could use it, and it worked out,” Miller said.

People can drop off items at On the House that are new or gently used as a donation to the free store.

Miller’s “why” is multifaceted as she knows times are tough for a lot of people.

“I want to help those in need,” she explained. “It’s about helping our neighbors, making connections and building community all while keeping perfectly good items out of the landfill.”

She blames overconsumption.

“The things we get donated are brand-new, with tags attached, because people are overbuying. We’re giving all of our money and resources to people who really don’t need it. Instead, let’s share, reuse, and keep our things out of landfills.”

If you want to donate or shop, there’s not much time.

On the House is open through Dec. 31, and Miller will stop taking donations Sunday, Dec. 21. Once the store closes, Miller will take all items to The Bargain Basement in Baltic.

In the meantime, in the spirit of community, On the House is hosting a community dinner at 5 p.m. Christmas Day.

Find the store at 415 E. Fourth St. and more information about hours or to RSVP for the dinner on Facebook.
