Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Locally owned Flyboy Donuts is planning a new flagship store at Empire Place along 41st Street in front of The Empire Mall. The plan is to open in May in a space on the west end of the building that includes Smoothie King.

Hawaii Fluid Art has opened at Empire Place. The studio offers classes, or customers can walk in to make their own poured acrylic-paint art on canvas. The locally owned franchise also has a retail area of gift and decor items and accessories. It’s open daily.

A hair salon specializing in blowouts has opened at Empire Place. Drybar is open daily.

The owner of Gateway Bar & Grill is starting Gib’s Sports Bar & Grill on the east side of Sioux Falls. Jack Rentschler Jr. purchased the former Cherry Creek Grill building at 3104 E. 26th St. The bar will have a full liquor license and a menu similar to Gateway’s when it opens, possibly as soon as mid-March. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

The first peer supporters trained by South Dakota startup Straight Up Care have started working with clients. The telehealth app matches people in addiction recovery with peer supporters.

Locally owned 605 Running Co. is adding a second Sioux Falls location. The downtown-based running gear retailer will expand in March to the former Posh Boutique space at The Bridges at 57th.

Iv&co has moved into its new home at Cherapa Place. The locally owned business, which offers IV infusions, other therapeutics, aesthetic services and weight-loss treatments, is on the first floor of The Bancorp Building, 345 N. Reid Place. It’s open daily.

Sanford Health has opened its newest clinic in northeast Sioux Falls. The clinic at 5920 E. Madison St. features 34 exam rooms and offers family medicine, pediatric, outpatient rehabilitation and women’s services. The building also has lab, radiology and ultrasound services. An adjacent Lewis Drug is expected to open before the end of March.

Pho Thai is planning to open a second location in Sioux Falls. The restaurant will be in a retail center that includes Michaels craft store on 34th Street between Louise and Shirley avenues. The full-service restaurant will have seating for almost 85 diners. Co-owner Kim Ueng said he’s anticipating an opening in April or May if construction goes smoothly.

In addition, the downtown Pho Thai is adding a sushi bar. The restaurant in Shriver Square is taking advantage of the building’s change to a single front entrance to expand with the aptly named Sushi Bar. It’s expected to open in April.

BB’s Pub N Grill, now known as BB’s, has reopened in its new home in northwest Sioux Falls. The bar and grill owned by Dave Birger was closed for a year while the building at 5402 W. University Trail was constructed. It’s open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and stays open later for drinks.

Starbucks has opened a stand-alone coffee shop at Dawley Farm Village just north of the retail center that includes Crumbl Cookies. The seating area includes a separate space designed for small meetings or groups. There’s a drive-thru and a patio. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend.

The Sonography Studio has opened at 2520 S. Lorraine Place at the west-side Lake Lorraine development. The Sioux City-based business provides parents-to-be with ultrasounds and other baby-related services. It also houses the boutique Keith & Lux, which sells maternity and baby merchandise.

In Flower has opened at 1010 E. Eighth St. Owner Stephanie Thi started her business selling dried floral arrangements online. The shop offers fresh and dried flowers, plants, vases, candles and gift items.

The downtown branch of Wells Fargo & Co. is temporarily closed because of a shortage of staff. It’s expected to reopen before the end of the month.

Boen & Associates has moved into its new office building at 7110 S. Lyncrest Place. The local firm provides insurance and risk management solutions.

The Good Samaritan Society plans to build a campus in southeast Sioux Falls that will include senior housing, a Sanford Health clinic and a Lewis Drug store. The Founders Crossing development will be on the northeast corner of 57th Street and Veterans Parkway. The first phase will include villa-style rental homes and a five-story building with independent, assisted living and memory care assisted living apartments. The second phase will have a short-term rehabilitation and long-term care center, additional villas, the clinic and the store.

The abrupt closure of The Sauna Haus in January is being investigated by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office. Owner Lori Meyer started the business at 1511 E. 69th St. in 2017.  A massage therapy business, MassageMeJen, is continuing to operate out of part of the space.

The newest DQ Grill & Chill in Sioux Falls has opened across from Jefferson High School. It has a double-lane drive-thru and seating for 60 inside and 15 on a patio. The quick-serve restaurant at 1710 N. Cavalier Ave. is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and until 11 p.m. in the summer. It’s the eighth location in the Sioux Falls area for franchisee Fourteen Foods.

Construction has started on three restaurants in the office building at The Steel District. Twin Cities entrepreneurs Josh Thoma and Kevin Fitzgerald, known for creating dining concepts such as Burger Dive and Smack Shack, are opening Big Sioux Burger, Bandera Tequila Bar and the upscale Ironwood with “a Midwest supper club vibe.” The plan is to open Big Sioux Burger and Bandera Tequila Bar by late summer, followed by Ironwood later this year.

Mainstream Boutique is closing its store at Dawley Farm Village. The final day will be Saturday. Franchisee Rachel Cinco has owned the east-side boutique since mid-2020.

Boss’ Pizzeria & Sports Bar has expanded to Okoboji, Iowa. The franchised location for the Sioux Falls-based restaurant chain is owned by Sioux Falls real estate agent Dave Dreessen. It replaced Minervas in the Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center, which is under new ownership.
