Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

South Dakota Trust Co. has been acquired by JTC, which has its headquarters on the island of Jersey, a self-governing British island. The company is publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange, has 28 offices in 22 countries and offers fund, corporate and private client services. Sioux Falls-based South Dakota Trust was founded in 2002 by Pierce McDowell III and Al King. It serves more than 1,700 high net worth and ultrahigh net worth family clients, including more than 100 billionaires and 350 centimillionaires. It employs more than 100 people in South Dakota, including 60 trust officers, and its presence here is expected to grow.

Shennon Blake has turned a side gig of crafting and sewing while also working as a nurse into a full-time job. The Tired Nurse sells affirmation jars filled with uplifting messages, along with jewelry, keychains and other handmade gifts. She has a site on Etsy and also sells her goods at local craft markets.

Southeast Technical College has entered into an alliance with Arizona State University, creating a way for students to transfer using the MyPath2ASU program. Students earning credits or an associate degree from Southeast Tech will be able to use the program to shorten the time to degree completion through ASU.

A Glacial Lakes Distillery co-owner is starting his own craft beer bar. Quentin Robertson and his wife, Jodi, plan to open Session Ale Works in the Firehouse 42 development near 12th and Ellis. It will have a full-size kitchen and a large patio that overlooks the lake at Family Park. Robertson hopes to open early next year.

Dillard’s plans to open its first department store in South Dakota the first week of March 2024. The Arkansas-based retailer is remodeling the former Younkers space in The Empire Mall and has built an addition on the west side of the building.

Kelly Family Properties has purchased three properties on the south side of 11th Street between Duluth and Summit avenues. The site, which includes several businesses and apartment units, has been plagued with crime for decades. Rory Kelly said he hopes to redevelop the properties with something positive and healthy that the neighborhood needs and wants, but he has no specific plans yet.

Kwik Star has opened its first convenience store, gas station and car wash in Sioux Falls. The store at 4300 E. 57th St. is open around the clock. Beyond typical offerings, Kwik Star, which is part of Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip, has grocery items like fresh meat and produce. It has extensive grab-and-go sections with hot and cold foods.

Hartford entrepreneurs Bob and Lori Gilliland have opened two adjacent retail shops in Sioux Falls: one selling candy and the other, CBD products. Sweet Amber Lynn’s and ShamRock CBD Shop are in the former Midco customer experience center in the Village on Louise retail center at 57th and Louise. The candy shop also has an extensive collection of sodas and sells candy-themed Lotus plant-based energy drinks, and the CBD shop also has an oxygen bar. They’re open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

A new seasonal shop, Christmas Spirit, sells personalized Christmas items and other holiday decor. Owner Sinan Taskin plans to keep the store at 2001 W. 41st St. going until the end of the year. It’s open daily.

The Washington Pavilion has started an arts consulting service that uses the Visual Arts Center’s curators to help source local art for commercial and residential projects. They can help find existing art or artists who will produce custom pieces.

Two longtime audiologists have come together to create a private practice. High Tone Hearing LLC opened recently at 4904 E. Rosa Parks Place. It’s co-owned by Sarah Johnson and Lori Miller, who have more than 30 years of combined experience. High Tone Hearing offers pediatric and adult diagnostics, hearing aids, newborn hearing screenings, auditory processing evaluations and treatment, cerumen removal, custom hearing protection and educational audiology services.

Interior designer Amanda Gilliland has joined Erica Locke in Articulate LLC, which Locke formed in early 2020. With the partnership, the full-service design firm now is adding procurement of furniture, fixtures and equipment and high-end residential design to its slate of services, which also include consultations and 3-D visualization. The partners are in the process of securing an office of their own in southeast Sioux Falls.

The site of a longtime bar west of Sioux Falls has a new venture with a new owner and a name that reflects his career flying 747s into war-torn countries. Mike Meendering opened Pilot Mike’s Roadhouse at the former site of 38 Roadhouse in late August. The bar has a malt beverage license and serves Harry’s Pizza and snacks. It’s open daily.

The Bancorp has moved from 69th and Western to the expanded Cherapa Place campus in downtown Sioux Falls. The office encompasses half of the sixth floor and all of the seventh and eighth floors in the 10-story building that bears its name.

Alicia ElMamouni has started a business of growing microgreens in her home. Little Greens microgreens are sold at Look’s Marketplace and some Hy-Vee locations, and she works with several local caterers, Salas Salsas and Dakota Fresh Food Hub.
