Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

National discount retailer Five Below is coming to Sioux Falls. The store plans to open its first location in the city at the Lake Lorraine development. It will be part of a new building being built adjacent to Hobby Lobby. Five Below sells nearly all its merchandise for $5 or less. The Five Below building is scheduled to break ground first thing in the spring, with plans to be open in time for this year’s holiday season.

Van Buskirk Cos. is planning a multiuse development near the southeast corner of 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue near the future stretch of South Veterans Parkway. It will include 32 acres of commercial development and 16 acres of multifamily housing.

Omnitech has built a 5,000-square-foot addition to its building at 5841 S. Corporate Place. The software engineering consultant has four dozen employees in Sioux Falls with room now to add up to two dozen more.

Starbucks has opened its 21st location in Sioux Falls. The newest coffee shop is in a retail center on the northeast corner of 69th Street and Cliff Avenue. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekend.

Sub Zero Desserts now offers its frozen treats year-round in a second location. The local business is at 401 E. Eighth St. in a storefront at 8th & Railroad Center. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday.

Prairie AquaTech has a new name for its growing business operations: Houdek. The Prairie AquaTech name lives on in its aquaculture operation. The company, which has its manufacturing base in Volga and R&D operations in Brookings, is expanding into ingredients for pet food and is beginning to leverage its fermentation science for use in human food.

Wes Rasmussen of Sioux Falls has started an online golf apparel business. OutWest Golf Co.’s first offerings include men’s polo-style shirts and quarter-zips. The plan is to add a women’s line and expand products.

Two new businesses are coming to an east-side retail center, and a third is expanding. The East 10th Street retail center will include a larger Pizza Ranch and additional locations for Planet Fitness and Dollar Tree. Pizza Ranch’s expansion, which might be done by early May, will be used for a larger FunZone arcade and a 20-seat party room. Planet Fitness and Dollar Tree expect to be open for business by the end of the year.

Marketing firm The Sampson House is tripling in size as it adds adjoining space at 522 N. Main Ave.

The owners of Air Madness in Harrisburg plan to convert the building’s rental space for basketball and other sports into an expanded family entertainment center. New offerings will include bowling, ax-throwing, arcade games and a restaurant. The goal is to have the expansion ready within a year’s time.

Minneapolis-based Banner Engineering Corp. is closing its electronics manufacturing plant in Huron. Product lines are being moved by the end of the year to other Banner facilities, the company said in a notice to the state about upcoming layoffs. The closure will mean 164 employees will be laid off on a rolling basis beginning in May.
