Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

The convenience stores alongside many Hy-Vee gas pumps have a new name and merchandise mix. They’ve been converted to Hy-Vee’s Fast & Fresh concept, which include on-the-go meal options and grocery staples such as produce and bakery items. The Fast & Fresh stores on West 26th Street and East 10th Street also have added a Market Grille Express, offering appetizers, pizza, burgers and sandwiches.

A new venture capital fund, Homegrown Capital, has been launched with $17.2 million available to regional technology startups. MarketBeat founder and CEO Matt Paulson and Tim Weelborg, former executive director of the Enterprise Institute, joined forces to raise the funding.

Children’s clothing store Tullabee is coming to The Empire Mall and will fill the former Yankee Candle space. Tullabee is part of Altar’d State, which has a boutique in the mall’s center court. It’s expected to open in early summer.

Dollar General has opened its fifth store in Sioux Falls. The new location is at 17th and Cleveland. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Kingbird Coffee Shop in Brandon has new owners. Michael and Jessica Gross bought the business at 509 N. Splitrock Blvd. from Billy and Ellison Cutrer, who started it two years ago. They’ve added Flyboy Donuts and are turning the loft into a public space. Kingbird’s hours are 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday but will be extended to 6:30 p.m. beginning March 1.

Two Sioux Falls-based credit unions have changed their names. Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union is now Levo Credit Union. Sioux Empire Federal Credit Union is now Bluestone Federal Credit Union.

Year Round Brown has moved its location at 57th and Louise to The Bridges at 57th. The tanning salon is in the former location of Rudy M. Navarette’s Tex-Mexican along 57th Street. Services include sun bed and spray tanning, along with an air brush studio. It’s open daily.

Courtyards at Golden Gateway, a “luxury ranch-style” single-family community for those 55 and older, has started construction near Veterans Parkway and Madison Street. It’s part of Ohio-based Epcon Communities and is being developed and built by Kelly Construction Inc. The 131 homes in the community will range in price from $400,000 to about $1 million.

Ariana Johnson has started 605 Florista in the Jones421 Building at 421 N. Phillips Ave. Johnson offers floral designs and sells blooming and green plants, cut flowers and gifts. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday.

Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza has opened in its new home at 775 N. Phillips Ave. The restaurant left its original location in the Jones421 Building for a larger space in The Cascade. It offers expanded seating, and a new liquor license that allows it to serve cocktails in addition to beer and wine. The menu will grow in the coming weeks.

Pandora is returning to The Empire Mall. The national jeweler known for its charm bracelets closed in 2020. The new location will be next to Sephora and White House Black Market. An opening time frame has not been announced.

Dart Boutique has moved from Tea to The Bridges at 57th. It’s open Monday through Saturday and is located in a corner space underneath Oh My Cupcakes. In addition to clothing of “all sizes for all women,” it sells gifts.

Forget Me Not Gift Boutique and Eddy Joy Baby Boutique are going out of business with owner Jody Kusek’s retirement. Final days for the shops at The Bridges at 57th have not been announced yet.

Kota Cafe food truck owner Renee Standish is operating out of the City Center, 231 N. Dakota Ave. She signed a three-year agreement to serve lunch in the building that houses several departments for the city of Sioux Falls. Kota Café also is open the public. Hours are 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays. She plans to keep running the food truck in warmer weather.

Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen has opened in its larger space and added a bar. It occupies both sides of the hallway through the first-floor marketplace of the Jones421 Building at 421 N. Phillips Ave. One side is the open-kitchen restaurant that seats about 40 diners, and the other side is the new bar that looks out into the building’s courtyard. Hours have been streamlined to 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The menu has expanded and will continue to grow in the coming weeks.

Hegg Cos. is adding a modular construction division, beginning with a 127,000-square-foot facility that’s being built in Brandon. Workers in the plant will build fully finished hotel rooms that can be placed together on-site. Production is expected to begin in November.

Dave & Buster’s has pushed its opening date to April 4. The arcade that includes a restaurant and bar most recently had been planned to open by March 1 at Lake Lorraine.

A Colorado-based cannabis company will open a franchised dispensary in Hartford. The Unity Rd. shop owned by B.J. Olson and Adam Jorgensen will be built at 404 W. Opal Lane and is expected to open in late spring or early summer.

National jewelry store Lovisa is expanding to The Empire Mall. It’s scheduled to open this summer across from Altar’d State.

Tally-Ho Art Gallery in Brandon has closed. Co-owner Lamont Hunt continues to sell his DakotaKid Creations artwork online and at events.  Hunt and his sister, Heather Taguchi, started the gallery in 2019.

Alternative HR, which provides human resource, recruiting and development-related services to businesses, nonprofits and public entities, has moved out of office space it leased at Startup Sioux Falls into a suite at 300 S. Phillips Ave.
