Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Muth Electric and Muth Technology will combine in a new building planned at Foundation Park. The two now are on the same approximately 3-acre campus in northeast Sioux Falls, with 100 employees split between two buildings. The business purchased about 7 acres at Foundation Park, directly east of the Amazon fulfillment center. The plan is to construct a 20,000-square-foot building next year.
‘O’ So Good has closed its restaurant in Garretson and is moving to Sioux Falls. The business will operate out of the kitchen at Wileys in downtown Sioux Falls, possibly before the end of the month.
FedEx Ground will be the tenant in the latest large-scale building under construction at Foundation Park. Dubbed “Project Puma,” the 330,000-square-foot building is owned by Indianapolis-based developer Scannell Properties and will replace a smaller existing FedEx Ground operation in Sioux Falls. It’s expected to be fully operational in 2024.
Allegiant Air is adding service from Sioux Falls to Austin, Texas. The flights, which will be year-round, begin Nov. 18 with travel on Thursdays and Sundays.
MK Threads Boutique and BluMoon Designs have moved from the downtown Jones421 Building into the former Young & Richards Flowers space at 222 S. Phillips Ave. The shops are open daily.
Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen is moving from its original space in Jones421 Building to two larger vacant spaces. It’s taking over the former MK Threads Boutique and BluMoon Designs spots. The move is expected to happen in September.
Salas Salsas, a Mexican food and catering business owned by mother-daughter duo Patricia Burbine and Marcela Salas, will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Jones421 Building later this year. It will take over the Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen space after it relocates in the downtown building.
Henna Harvest, owned by Anndell Wubben, is opening this week in the former Intoxibakes space in the Jones421 Building. It’s a studio for henna, a temporary body art. Intoxibakes moved earlier this summer into the former OG Greens space.
Renee Standish has started a food truck, Kota Cafe, featuring homestyle food. The menu includes sliders, hot dogs, chili dogs, popcorn chicken that’s hand-battered and fried, and chicken bites that are marinated and grilled. She makes hand-cut and hand-battered fries, pickles and jalapenos, and other sides made from scratch.
Kendra Brouwer, founder of Kosha Yoga School, and Dakotah Jordan, founder of Dakotah Yoga, are partnering to form Frontier Wellness – a move that also them becoming partners in Frontier Climbing and Fitness. They plan to build a 7,000-square-foot building next to the climbing and fitness center. It will include hot yoga and regular yoga studios, multipurpose space and four wellness offices. The plan is to open the new building early next year.
Facing fears of a shortage of chicken wings, one national restaurant chain has made a clever adaptation. Wingstop, which has a restaurant at 1902 S. Minnesota Ave., has created Thighstop. The virtual brand is available through DoorDash, with delivery and carryout options. Customers can get boneless or bone-in thighs tossed in one of 11 flavors that Wingstop also uses.
A Mexican restaurant, La Plaza Fiesta, is coming to a retail center in front of the Walmart at 85th and Minnesota. It’s a partnership of restaurant operators who have locations in Brookings, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The owners hope to open before winter.
Remodeling work has closed the lobby and dining room at Taco Bell on Louise Avenue just south of 41st Street, and the entire restaurant is expected to be closed Aug. 2-29.
Fat Kid Filly’s has taken over the concessions contract at Huset’s Speedway for the remainder of the season and is planning to open a brick-and-mortar location in Salem. Cody Sauers and his wife, Amber, started the business as a food truck in 2020, expanded into concessions at Sioux Falls venues and added a second truck this year. The restaurant will be called Fat Kid Saloon. Details will be coming once the city of Salem approves the plans.
Dave & Buster’s has posted job openings for Sioux Falls, which seem to indicate the national chain will finish construction work at the site at Lake Lorraine. All construction was put on hold when the company was forced to shut down locations nationwide during the pandemic and gradually has restarted.
RoundHouse BrewPub has opened in a retail center on 69th Street just east of Cliff Avenue. The menu features smash burgers, wings, chislic, sandwiches, wraps, pizzas and more. There are 16 beers on tap, including nine from Roundhouse Brewery in Nisswa, Minn. It’s open daily.
Let It Fly has opened in the former Turks & Caicos Cabana Grille building at 57th and Western. The upscale sports bar, which is owned by former NBA player and South Dakota native Mike Miller, features more than 80 televisions. The menu includes appetizers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, wings, ribs, pizzas and other entrees. There are 20 taps, including many local beers. Hours are 11 a.m. through midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
