City plans Riverline District announcement next week

Jan. 30, 2024

The group working on a proposal for the Riverline District downtown plans to bring its vision forward next week.

The 8.3 acres on the southeast edge of downtown includes the state’s labor department office, which is moving to the new South Dakota One Stop office building at Dawley Farm Village.

An announcement is planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

“Over the past year, Friends of the Riverline District committee members have been gathering data and information about what Sioux Falls needs, while dreaming about this transformational opportunity alongside the community,” the city said in a statement announcing the event. “On Feb. 5, they are ready to unveil a big, bold vision for the future.”

It also notes the event is open to all ages and will include indoor recreational activities for kids from 1 to 3 p.m. It’s an in-service day for the Sioux Falls School District.

When the Riverline District was announced last year, a public survey drew nearly 1,600 responses and more than 700 comments on an interactive map. The overriding theme was that the public wanted to see a mixed-use district.

The Sioux Falls Development Foundation has an option to buy the land at 10th Street and Franklin Avenue and has until the second half of the year to exercise it.

The Events Center Task Force’s work largely has been on hold awaiting recommendations from the Riverline District because both entities have considered future needs for stadiums, convention space and recreation space.
