City building permits continue to crush previous years

Aug. 2, 2021

It’s not even close.

Through July, building permits in Sioux Falls totaled $607.1 million, far ahead of last year’s $349.8 million and the $406.6 million in permits issued through the same time in 2019.

All categories of construction are outpacing last year, but commercial activity has become especially robust.

New commercial permits total $247.5 million, more than double last year’s $121.1 million for the same time and well ahead of the $129.3 million in 2019.

Commercial addition and remodeling projects are a similar story, totaling $134.8 million, compared with $66.2 million last year and $112.7 million in 2019.

Major projects that were issued permits in July include The Carlton apartments, a new addition at Dawley Farm Village, at $26 million, and the new Avera medical center also at Dawley Farms at $23 million.

Residential construction also continues its record pace, with new residential permits totaling $186.5 million through July, compared with $126 million both of the previous years.

That represents 542 new single-family homes, up from 380 last year.

Multifamily construction also is significantly outpacing the past two years at 1,118 units through July, compared with 537 last year and 338 in 2019.
