Candle company opens downtown store

Oct. 3, 2022

A Sioux Falls native has brought his Colorado-based candle company to downtown Sioux Falls.

Jeremy Nosbush and his partner, Tyler Pate, have opened MatchBox Candle Co. at 124 S. Phillips Ave.

They started the business, which specializes in 100 percent soy wax candles, a few years ago while making gifts for family and friends.

They now have two storefronts in the Colorado Springs area.

The Sioux Falls location opened over the weekend with 24 fragrances, including seasonal fall favorites such as carrot spice cake, and a bar that is designed to host candle-making workshops.

“We think it’s coming together super great. The public seems very excited about it,” said Nosbush, a  2016 Washington High School graduate.

“Every single person we’ve talked to has said this is a great location, and we definitely agree.”

Candle-making workshops are designed to last 45 minutes to an hour and can be scheduled for groups online or in the store.

“You can bring your own wine or snacks, or it’s great for birthday parties,” Nosbush said. “You can schedule a class with friends, or pop in and we most likely can get you started.”

The space, which used to be 605 Running Co., has been extensively redesigned.

“We’ve been really having a lot of fun in this space,” Nosbush said. “We’ve completely transformed it in here, took out fitting rooms and turned it into a candle workshop. We totally have that antique primitive theme, which we feel like is really something new for downtown.”

605 Running Co. is moving to the Johnson Building downtown at 11th Street and Second Avenue, and has opened temporarily at 1020 S. Minnesota Ave. until that space is ready.

MatchBox Candle Co. also includes consigned work from local artists. The owners are working with about 15 handmade businesses, including some they brought from Colorado, to sell everything from artwork to home decor.

They’re looking to add more, the owners said.

The business also is still hiring for all positions.

“We’re going to be here for the week, and we’re on board with a couple employees, and we’ll be back and forth monthly,” Nosbush said.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
