Aug. 1, 2022

Within a week, Sioux Falls likely will have surpassed its 2021 building record.

That’s according to chief building official Butch Warrington, who today released the permit valuations through July.

Permits totaled $1.07 billion, up from $607 million for the same time last year.

The 2021 record total was $1.1 billion.

New commercial activity is nearly triple last year at $745.9 million, compared with $247.5 million through July of last year.

New residential is lagging slightly behind at $181 million, compared with $186.5 million. Building permits have been issued for 507 single-family homes, compared with 542 for the same time last year.

Permits have been issued for 2,400 apartment units, compared with 1,181 a year ago, but that’s considered commercial construction.

Residential remodeling at $62.8 million is well ahead of last year’s $38.4 million.

Large projects permitted in July include the Sage Meadows Apartments and Townhomes at 7801 S. Pasqueflower Lane at nearly $43 million, the Augustana Midco Ice Center at 2510 S. Grange Ave. at $20 million, The Blu apartments at Lake Lorraine at $17 million and the Comfort Inn & Suites at the Sanford Sports Complex at $6 million.

As Sioux Falls surpasses $1B in permits, more development looms for second half of year
