Attention, artists: Who wants to paint this piano?
Aug. 9, 2024
A historic grand piano is about to become a blank canvas for a winning artist.
Serendipity Studio, Cresten Capital and Popplers Music are partnering on the Paint the Piano project, looking to transform a piano inside Shriver Square in downtown Sioux Falls.
The unique installation will be displayed in the building’s grand foyer to provide a platform for the artist’s work.
The deadline to apply is Aug. 31. A committee will review the applications, and the artist selected will be notified Sept. 6. The goal is to install the work by Oct. 4 to be unveiled during the DTSF Art & Wine Walk.
The goal is to create original artwork on the piano while maintaining its functionality, potentially incorporating three-dimensional or interactive features.
The piano was more recently housed at The History Club in Sioux Falls.
“We are excited to partner with two great organizations to bring this unique art experience to Sioux Falls.” said Jason Pfitzer, owner of Serendipity Studio, an art gallery in the building at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue.
“It blends visual and musical arts together to make a wonderful addition to the Sioux Falls art community. I am really looking forward to seeing what the art community can come up with to breathe new life into this antique piano.”
Artists are encouraged to reflect the historical significance of the piano, The History Club and the Shriver Square building in their designs.
“Cresten Capital stresses how important it is to support the local art community, along with continuing to revive the beauty of the historic buildings in downtown, two issues that are important to their business,” the organizations said in a statement. “The final artwork must ensure the piano remains playable, integrating creativity with respect for its historical roots.”
An honorarium of $1,000 will be awarded to the selected artist or artists, meant as full compensation for all services, materials and expenses.
