Associate attorney from Illinois now growing career at Sioux Falls firm

Dec. 27, 2022

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Kurt Kingler, an associate attorney at Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith LLP.

Name: Kurt Wm. Kingler

Age: 29

Hometown: Wheaton, Illinois

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I accepted a two-year clerkship with United States Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy of the District of South Dakota. She sits in Sioux Falls.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

It’s an exciting, growing city. My wife and I wanted to settle in a small city where we could — someday — have a hobby farm outside town while pursuing rigorous and enriching careers. Sioux Falls fits the bill.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I like to write. Although it may seem formulaic, effective legal writing takes skill. And I like to win; I’m happy to have a job where ambition is rewarded.

How did you get connected to your industry?

During law school, I spent a good deal of time at the career services office. That office helped me get work and internship opportunities that set me apart when I sought a judicial clerkship. Then, in Sioux Falls, my clerkship afforded a unique two-year window to observe attorneys and firms. It helped me integrate into the South Dakota legal industry.

Describe Davenport Evans in three words.

Distinguished. Collegial. Dependable.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

Two things. I played semipro box lacrosse, and I make pottery. And a third — my Rubik’s Cube personal best is under 30 seconds.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

Apart from charitable giving, I look forward to serving on community organizations’ boards. Using my professional skills in service of community interests sounds exciting.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I’m still waiting for a Chicago-style deep-dish pizzeria.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

I have a few friends who are full-time fine artists. It would be fun to start a gallery or art agency with them.
