Architecture firm doubles space with downtown office expansion

April 17, 2024

JLG Architects has doubled its downtown office space and “designed it for well-being,” its leaders said.

Since 2016, the employee-owned firm has leased 4,125 square feet at 232 S. Main Ave. Now, it has expanded next door with an additional 4,075 square feet in what used to be Lemonly’s office.

When JLG, which was founded in Grand Forks, North Dakota, expanded to Sioux Falls eight years ago, there were five employee-owners here. The 10-year plan was to create a dozen positions.

“And today, our Sioux Falls office is home to 24,” said Catherine Dekkenga, principal architect. “We are thrilled to see this kind of positive growth for Sioux Falls and JLG.”

The new office includes five conference rooms, additional restrooms and break rooms, desk workstations and a variety of nontraditional workstation options. It also draws on JLG’s partnership with Rehfelds Modern Fine Art & Framing with a display of regional art collections on the walls.

JLG’s in-house interior design team of Alison Carlson and Marissa Arroyo assisted in the design and curated the furnishings. The office’s original wood floor was preserved, and a carpet tile designed to evoke the outdoors was used both to minimize open office and flooring noise as well as double as a backdrop for virtual meetings.

A kitchenette also transitioned to a working cafe.

“We design for workplace well-being, and it’s important that we practice what we preach,“ Dekkenga said.

“Half our staff prefer designated desks, and the other half prefer to work in less-formal or flexible workstations that accommodate varying tasks. Like many offices, our employee-owners want options – this includes having the ability to work from a desk or work informally from an adaptable armchair, lounge area, collaborative space or individual workspace. Flexibility is important because all 200-plus employee-owners across nine offices have the ability to work remotely as needed and travel often between offices into address-free work zones.”

JLG Architects will hold a ribbon-cutting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
