Downtown Jones421 marketplace filling up with restaurants, shops

A downtown marketplace is filling up again with businesses.

New Jones421 tenants that have opened recently or are working on their spaces include an Indonesian restaurant, a nutritional drink shop, a vintage store and a restaurant that will incorporate an educational program for families to teach kids about growing and eating healthy foods.

Smart Farms is taking over the former Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen restaurant and bar space in the building at 421 N. Phillips Ave. Owner Mike Smart is the creator of Bucket Buddies, a curriculum that features 50 cartoon characters, each with its own lesson. He will invite families that homeschool their children to join the Grow Club and use the Bucket Buddies materials to teach kids how to grow their own food.

“The idea is to show people that you can grow your own food and use it,” Smart said.

The restaurant will serve food using fruits and vegetables that have been cultivated on-site in aeroponic grow towers.

“We will be selling waffles for breakfast, salads for lunch, and smoothies and popcorn all day,” Smart said.

Everyone will be welcome to eat at Smart Farms, which will include grab-and-go items too. The business also will sell grow towers and other merchandise.

“We should be fully operational by June 1,” he said. “We’re going to do our best to not have to change too much.”

His teenage daughters will help him paint, and he’ll add stickers on the walls and change the lighting.

He envisions being open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. six or seven days a week and possibly opening earlier in the summertime.

Only one vacancy remains, said Sheila Hazard, a co-owner and property manager of the building, which has condos on the floors above. That 540-square-foot space is next to the new Indonesian restaurant, which took up half of the location that had been Intoxibakes.

That restaurant is Eauthenentic Achipelago Taste, or EAT, which Grace Prully Ingelin operated for a short time last year in The Empire Mall.

Ingelin moved with her husband and son to Sioux Falls a few years ago from Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country that is made up of thousands of islands between the Indian and Pacific oceans.

The cuisine is unique to Sioux Falls, she said. EAT’s first day was Wednesday, and the menu will expand as she adds more equipment to the space.

Current offerings include martabak, which is similar to a pancake. Once it’s cooked, it’s  topped with ingredients like peanut butter, Nutella and nuts, and then stacked like a sandwich or rolled. There’s also a savory version with a variety of cheeses.

Ingelin also is making tinutuan, a porridge/soup made with rice, pumpkin, corn, kale and sweet potato that’s often eaten as a breakfast food, but she serves it until she runs out. There also are risoles, a crispy pastry roll that’s filled with chicken and veggies or other ingredients.

The restaurant won’t have a fryer, but it will have an oven, so she’ll eventually make an adapted version of her Indonesian fried rice, which was popular at the mall location.

The beverage menu also will expand once her refrigerator arrives. When she opened, she was serving bandrek, a spiced drink with ginger and lemongrass.

Ingelin will use the entire space as her kitchen, but diners can eat at the communal seating that the building offers in several spaces throughout the first-floor marketplace.

EAT is starting with hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and it’s available through DoorDash.

Also coming to the building is Fuel House Nutrition.

The Herbalife shop is taking over a space next to Fig & Fur Resale and is expected to open sometime in May.

Owners Kaleb and Haley Lindsey also own The Drop Nutrition in Brandon and were co-owners of Fit Revolution Nutrition until recently.

The menu will include meal-replacement smoothies, energy drinks and teas, along with acai bowls, Kaleb Lindsey said.

“It’s going to be a healthy alternative option for downtown,” he said. “It will be space for people who are busy and on the go or who want to sit down and enjoy a good conversation.”

The shop, which is filled with natural light, will have seating along the counter, and there will be more room in one of the building’s common seating areas right next to it and outside in the courtyard when the weather is nice.

Hours have not been set, but might be 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays and then opening a little later on Saturdays. With all of the evening activity downtown in the summer, there probably will be “some popup hours as well,” he said.

Across the hallway, Fig & Fur Resale has been open since February.

Owners Chantale and Charles Connelly had been doing summer vendor shows with their vintage finds since 2023 but were ready for a permanent home.

“If it catches my eye while we’re out and about, and if it’s something I can bring into the store, I try to bring it in and hopefully it catches somebody else’s eyes,” said Chantale Connelly, noting that she has been a rummager since she was a girl.

“I’ve always had the bug of finding good deals and now we’re passing those along.”

The shop offers a range of vintage household items, decor, toys and collectible items.

Charles has an area in the back of the shop where he stocks his finds like coins and knives. That’s also where the couple’s dogs hang out. Behind the checkout counter is the home of the store mascot, Puffy, a Netherlands Dwarf rabbit.

The shop is a popular stop for people traveling for business and their families and for tourists also staying at the nearby hotels, Connelly said.

“We’re just very thankful that we found this place and that we have this spot,” she said. “This is our next adventure, and we’ll just see what we can do with it.”

Fig & Fur Resale is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and hours will expand as the weather gets nicer, she said.
