Expanded space, consistent experience: Inside Silencer Central’s new distribution center

As one of the nation’s fastest-growing companies, Silencer Central has a history of needing additional space.

That became the case again in late 2024, when the Sioux Falls company broke ground on a distribution center to support its expanding line of suppressors and related products.

It’s located on the same campus as its headquarters building in north-central Sioux Falls.

In designing the modern distribution center, “we had a certain aesthetic established, inside and out, so we wanted the new building to match and really create a cohesive campus,” Silencer Central project manager Cheryl Ward said.

“We were open to working with a new furniture vendor, so we initiated a bid process, which was how we were introduced to Interstate Office Products.”

The team from IOP responded.

“They came in and nailed it,” Ward said. “They made it easy for us to look through the bid, and they were more competitive than we expected. They allowed us to stay within a conservative budget and provided us a lot of options.”

The IOP team of business developer Kevin Kuphal, account manager Mark Payne and interior designer Abby Tufvesson supported the Silencer Central project.

“They came out to see our existing workspace and helped select appropriate materials to make sure they were as cohesive as they needed to be,” Ward said.

From there, she toured IOP’s downtown Sioux Falls showrooms where options for furniture were set up.

“We tried different chairs and talked about wall height and glass dividers, options for the workspaces and our boardroom and conference room,” Ward said.

“I just found them super-welcoming – a great team with tremendous people who were super-responsive.”

Kuphal had worked with Silencer Central in a previous role.

“It was nice to resume the relationship, and I was able to understand their needs,” he said. “I began working with them when they were buying basic office furniture for one of their original offices.”

In preparing for the new distribution center, “it was important that the people working in this building didn’t have a different feel from those working in the main office,” he continued.

“So we were tasked with staying on brand to make it a seamless transition for employees. We didn’t sacrifice aesthetics, ergonomics, comfort or style with the move to the new building.”

Working with Silencer Central’s brand standard “made it a fairly seamless process,” Tufvesson said.

“We worked with them to match our products to their previously selected standards for configurations and aesthetics.”

As decisions were needed, “they were great about communicating,” Ward added.

“I always had a timeline for what was needed, which was exactly what I want as a project manager: a vendor who lays it out, so I know what needs to get done and when.”

Silencer Central chose selections for seven private offices and an open office area seating 16 people.

All team members received height-adjustable desks, and slight modifications allowed Silencer Central to optimize its budget.

“Sometimes, certain enhancements really aren’t necessary to achieve the look and feel you desire, so we were able to offer them options that give a really nice designer look while eliminating features that didn’t generate a return for the work environment,” Kuphal said. “Plus, they get the durability and warranty of Steelcase products.”

Additionally, the new facility features an open seating and kitchen area.

“While the goal was to replicate what they had in their other building, this also allowed them to make some modifications including in the break area,” Payne said.

“All the selections complement their existing furniture but also gives everything a more cohesive look as you move from one building to the next.”

The distribution center also includes an executive boardroom and an additional conference room.

“We wanted a more elevated feel in the mini boardroom like we have in our administrative building,” Ward said.

Installation “was super-quick,” she said. “We had a couple things that needed to be replaced, and they had it done within weeks. We were able to have everything installed and get the team in earlier than we thought.”

IOP recognized the need for efficiency, Kuphal said.

“We know they’re a fast-paced company and appreciate work being executed in a timely fashion,” he said. “We understand that mindset and knew what needed to be done.”

The finished space was done in time for the company’s 20th anniversary celebration in 2025.

“Everyone was really excited about it,” Ward said. “They were wowed by the space. It’s absolutely incredible to see how it functions and how well everything flows. It will be a game-changer for sure.”

The IOP team checked in with her in the weeks following installation too.

“They just wanted to see how everyone liked it and if there was anything missing,” Ward said. “They cared. Overall, it was just a great team to work with, and I’m looking forward to working with them again.”
