Cafe Breadico brings sourdough pastries, sandwiches to downtown

Sept. 3, 2025

A new cafe from the owners of Breadico opened officially this morning at downtown’s Cherapa Place.

Cafe Breadico from David and Megan Napolitano is on the west side of The Bancorp Building in the development along Sixth Street. A wall of windows in the ground-level cafe look out to the Big Sioux River, the Arc of Dreams and downtown’s skyline.

Inside, there’s a long case filled with pastries and sandwiches – all made with sourdough — and an espresso station.

There’s an open refrigerated case filled with bottles of colorful juices and cans of locally made Songbird Kombucha.

The dining area features table and banquette seating, with more tables to come. Patio seating also is available.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The opening menu, which David Napolitano refers to as the “starting lineup,” features sourdough pastries and sandwiches made on Breadico’s signature sourdough breads — all of which are made with freshly milled grain.

Longtime customers who remember Breadico’s original downtown location at Eighth Street and Weber Avenue might celebrate the return of Napolitano’s sandwiches. “We’re reviving it in a way people enjoy, I hope,” he said.

They’ll find options like Italian Ham, Muffaletta, Turkey & Apple and the Paisano with Genoa salami, sopresetta, Calabrese, provolone, sun-dried tomato, pepperoncini, arugula, garlic and olive oil on ciabatta.

There also are slices of sourdough focaccia baked with seasonal ingredients and salads like three bean Italian and mozzarella with tomato.

A few loaves of bread, which are baked on site, will be available, Napolitano noted, but they’ll be different from the ones customers can find at the bakery, which is now at 6219 S. Western Ave.

“I want people to understand it’s not just a second bread store. It’s a cafe, and we want to make really great products.”

For breakfast, customers also will find yogurt with fruit, quiche and sourdough bagels with cream cheese.

An evening menu is still being developed, Napolitano said, noting that “We’re going to see how everything goes first.” In the meantime, customers can enjoy beer along with espresso drinks and likely a more limited offering in the pastry and sandwich case.

The cafe offers a full espresso bar, using coffee beans that are new to Sioux Falls from Stumptown Coffee Roasters, which has shops in Portland, Oregon, along with New York City, Los Angeles and Kyoto, Japan.

Cafe Breadico’s large space is meant to be welcoming for customers to linger, Napolitano said.

“We just really wanted to go for a comfortable, casual, quick-eating cafe and coffee shop for people to take advantage of it and the view and just sit there and spend some time.”

The banquette seating features outlets so people can plug in and work remotely on their laptops.

Napolitano hopes customers see the beauty in the space and the “great atmosphere” they’re trying to create for customers and staff, with more to come.

“We’re celebrating great products and great grains, and we’ll further that conversation in the space.”

To find the cafe, customers can enter from the east side of The Bancorp Building at 345 N. Reid Place or along the river side, which is adjacent to the city’s recreation trail.

Parking is available along Reid Place, Sixth Street and in the development’s parking garage.
