New Dell Rapids dessert shop expands with breakfast menu
June 26, 2025
A Dell Rapids dessert shop that opened this spring has expanded its menu to include breakfast items.
Sweet Scoops Ice Cream and Bakery opened May 15.
From coffee and doughnuts to ice cream and jelly beans, it is intended to be a one-stop shop for its customers, owner Daryl Springman said.
Springman owned Dells Diesel Service before opening Sweet Scoops. After running the repair shop for 25 years, he planned on moving into retirement and found a company to buy it from him.
“Then I thought, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve got too much time on my hands, and I want to do something else,’” Springman said. “I’ve always wanted to do an ice cream shop, but I was too busy out of my diesel shop to do that. I had time to do it now.”
Springman opened his new venture in a space at 409 N. Highway 77 — a building he already owned.
“While I’ve been in Dell Rapids, I’ve been scoping out different things that this town needs and people want,” Springman said. “So I thought, why not an ice cream shop and coffee shop — a one-stop-type thing for mornings and evenings.”
Walking into Sweet Scoops, customers are met with an array of options. According to Springman, mornings are the most popular time to order coffee and doughnuts. The shop serves Caribou Coffee — from lattes to blended drinks — as well as daily fresh rolls and doughnuts from Mr. Donuts.
“Just like clockwork, it switches by 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. in the afternoon,” Springman said. “Then, people start coming in for ice cream.”
Sweet Scoops serves 12 rotating flavors of hard-serve SDSU Ice Cream.
“Everybody likes ice cream,” Springman said.
Along with classic treats like a banana split, Sweet Scoops’ menu includes several original creations. Topped with whipped cream and a cherry on top, the Nacho Sundae features two scoops of ice cream, waffle cone chips and a choice of sauces and toppings.
Bringing the menu full circle, the Donut Sundae pairs a fresh doughnut with one to two scoops of ice cream and is topped with drizzle, sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry. Other creations include the Cardinal Sundae and the Quarrier Sundae.
Fresh baked goods from Brandy’s Custom Cakery in Parker are delivered two times a week. In addition to cookies, sundaes, cones and milkshakes, Sweet Scoops also sells jelly beans in bulk.
As of June 16, Sweet Scoops’ menu features a variety of savory breakfast items. Grab-and-go options include croissant sandwiches, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, as well as breakfast bowls. Called Sweet Scoops Skillets, the bowls include hash browns, sausage gravy, cheese, salsa and scrambled eggs. The croissant sandwiches are made with a choice of bacon or sausage, egg and cheese. Breakfast burritos are filled with bacon, egg, cheese and salsa.
“We’re hoping that a lot of people will stop in and grab a breakfast sandwich or some breakfast to head out and drive to Sioux Falls or wherever they go to work,” Springman said.
Depending on the success of this location, Springman said he might consider bringing Sweet Scoops to Sioux Falls.
“I’m always open for options.”
Sweet Scoops’ hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
