Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

The Exercise Coach is coming to Sioux Falls. It’s a national fitness business being franchised locally by Wade and Amy Kranz and their daughter and son-in-law Emily and Zac Etrheim. The coach-led approach targets strength training with 20-minute workouts guided for each person by Exerbotics equipment. The business plans to open in July in the IMA Building at 6709 S. Minnesota Ave.

A longtime food truck owner is expanding with a restaurant in Harrisburg. Carlos Salgado, who lives in Harrisburg, will open Breaking Burrito Restaurant in a new building that will be constructed behind the Starbucks that’s going up east of the Kwik Star on Willow Street. Salgado started Breaking Burrito in 2016. Construction on the restaurant is expected to begin at the end of the month or in early June, Salgado said. He’s hoping to open in October at the end of the food truck season. He will continue to operate the two Breaking Burrito food trucks and Mr. Churro, another one he started last year.

Newcomers to Harrisburg are opening a Japanese restaurant in the vacant Harrisburgers building.  TJ Anto and his wife, Jessica Koenig-Anto, are starting Samurai Hibachi & Sushi Express. They hope to open in early June.

Hollie and Brock Scott are opening Ark Academy in the former Apple Tree Children’s Center at 3309 E. 26th St. The child care center is enrolling infants through pre-kindergarteners and hiring staff, with a teacher-to-child ratio of 1-to-5. Teachers will stay with a group of kids as they grow older. The plan is to start providing care in mid-June.

FedEx Freight has started operating out of a new location in Foundation Park in northwest Sioux Falls. The 76-door building is an increase from the previous 49-door location and has room for additional expansion.

Culver’s is coming to northwest Sioux Falls. The new restaurant will be at Benson and Northview, across the street from Fleet Farm. It’s expected to open later this year.

Taco John’s is closing its original location in Sioux Falls, likely in mid-July. According to the  franchise group, it made more sense to realign restaurants rather than upgrade the older building at 1420 W. 41st St., which will be sold. Employees will move to the Tea location, which is expected to open in mid- to late July.

Uptown Cheapskate, a national “upscale thrift” retailer, has opened on the north side of the Western Mall. The locally owned franchise specializes in buying and selling trendy, gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for teens and adults. It’s open daily.

Totally Rad Eats, a new concept from Fernson Brewing Co. and chef Beau Vondra, will take over the kitchen at Fernson Downtown in the coming weeks. It will be burger-focused but also serve hot dogs, chicken tenders and snacks – “good food to pair with beer,” Vondra said. Totally Rad also will have a breakfast menu to complement the taproom’s Fernson Coffee + Tea service. It’s expected to open between mid-June and early July. The concept replaces Wagoo Burger, which closed last week and will continue with its food truck while the business looks for another restaurant location.

Dollar Tree has opened two more stores in Sioux Falls. The most recent, which is No. 10, opened earlier this week at the Sanford Sports Complex. It’s at 3700 N. Northview Ave. in front of Fleet Farm. Earlier this spring, Dollar Tree opened a store at Lake Lorraine. It’s at 2536 S. Lorraine Place in a retail center that includes Wings Gymnastics and Apricot Lane Boutique.

Scandinavian Designs is closing its Sioux Falls furniture store, likely in the next four to six weeks. The national retailer opened in 2019 at 4401 W. Empire Place in the former Toys R Us building on the campus of The Empire Mall.

Scott Ehrisman has started Downtown Rickshaw, using an electric trike that accommodates two passengers. The service is available for trips around downtown, which cost $5 each. Hourly rentals also are available.

A new independent coffee shop hopes to deliver a big-city vibe with its handcrafted espresso drinks. Shah Afrouzi has opened Voodoo Coffee Shop in a retail center at 1033 N. Minnesota Ave. Afrouzi worked with Coffea Roasterie to create a unique roast. A second darker roast is imported. It’s open daily.

Zach Neugebauer has opened PromoSigns, offering customizable 4-by-8-foot black street signs, available for short-term or long-term rentals. The signs are designed for grand openings, new locations, special promotions and help wanted announcements. The business is licensed and bonded with the city of Sioux Falls to handle all permitting, documentation, installation and letter changes and offers an option for customized logos.
