4-year-old downtown produce grower plans Saturday sale

A 4-year-old’s version of a farmers market will be open for business Saturday.

It’s the latest harvest of Siggy Dandar, who has been growing produce on the roof of his downtown home – when he’s not busy with preschool.

“Because they’re good for our bodies and we’re learning how to grow them,” he explained, adding that planting seeds and watering is the best part. Along with eating them.

“That’s fun too.”

Siggy’s Veggies has held a few sales outside the Boyce-Greeley building at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue so far this season and plans at least one more to end the year.

“People say, ‘Oh thanks, I’ll stop back later to get some more,’” he said.

On Saturday, he’ll be outside around 11 a.m. and sell for an hour or more until the veggies are sold. Customers will find tomatoes, peppers, purple and green beans, kale, a few carrots and some edible flowers.

Younger brother Fritz will be helping at the sale too.

“He kind of gets into trouble sometimes, but he helps sell vegetables,” Siggy said.

He waters the garden daily and has used his harvest in the kitchen too, adding he likes making salads and last week made a soup with tomatoes and corn.

He plans to donate Saturday’s sales to the Stockyards Ag Experience and invites other kids to sell with him.

“Maybe other kids will start growing vegetables too,” he added.
