Wild Water West kicks off the season as camping addition wraps up

The attractions are open and the pools are ready, but it will be a little longer before you can go camping at Wild Water West.

The newest addition to the park is to the south and will hold 159 campsites plus a bar and convenience store.

“We don’t have a set date on it yet. We had some delays with the storm a few weeks ago and it flooded a little bit, so we’re just waiting on a date from the contractor which we’ll hopefully know soon,” office manager Kara Harms said.

Then online reservations will start and there will be a social media push to promote it, she said.

The convenience store will open at the same time “because that’s where people will check in and we’ll also have a bar and some video lottery down there, plus a big community room where people will be able to have events,” she said.

While the dates aren’t set yet, it will be available at some point this summer, she said.

Wild Water West hasn’t added any new attractions within the park for the season, but guest favorites such as the lazy river, swim-up bar and pirate ship are up and running, Harms said.

“This last weekend was one of our busier weekends, and we’re expecting with the hot weather we’ll be having people coming out which will be fun,” she said.

The storms in May caused some damaged to trees, roofs and siding at the park, but it’s been fixed, she added.

Wild Water West is in good shape for staff, although “we’re always taking more people,” Harms said. “If they’re interested, we’ll take them, but we’re not pushing right now.”

Visitors should note that 41st Street is under construction. You’re encouraged to use alternative routes including Sertoma to 57th Street, which is gravel, and SD Highway 42.
