Upcoming free marketing event to bring ‘caliber of expertise never heard in Sioux Falls’

Some of the marketing industry’s leading experts will be coming to Sioux Falls for a free event later this month.

Don Jacobs, market manager and vice president at Results Radio, first hosted the Marketing Workshop in 1984 and has done so every two years since.

“I felt there was a need for locally owned businesses to hear from someone outside the market who had firsthand experience working directly with businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would help them compete with all of the larger big-box stores popping up and new franchised stores opening. It was a huge success with over 500 businesses attending. Attendees walked away with practical nuts-and-bolts ideas they could use. Every business has both challenges and opportunities, but sometimes it’s impossible to see when you’re working so hard in your business.”

This year’s event is from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 30 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

“All three speakers have worked with and grown various sizes and types of businesses, from very small family-owned to Fortune 100 companies,” Jacobs said. “This caliber of marketing expertise has never been seen or heard in Sioux Falls.”

Speakers include:

  • Alexis Gresh, the leader of the World Advertising Research Center’s consultancy in North America, who has worked with major brands such as McDonald’s, PepsiCo, Kellogg’s and Smithfield.

  • Martin Lindstrom, a consultant to Fortune 100 companies named among “Time” magazine’s “World’s 100 Most Influential People.” His company, Lindstrom Company, operates across five continents and serves clients such as McDonald’s, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, The LEGO Group, Cisco, The Walt Disney Company, Novozymes, iRobot, Red Bull, Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company, Carrefour and Lowe’s.

  • Roy H. Williams, a New York Times bestselling author of six books on marketing. He serves as a consultant to businesses worldwide and has spent much of his career asking “What makes people do the things they do?”

The Marketing Workshop is a good fit for anyone who owns or manages a business or nonprofit or is helping grow one, Jacobs said.

“Marketing has become confusing because there are a lot of media and tactic choices,” he said.

“There’s a lot of confusing information, and most businesses have tighter budgets, so we wanted speakers who could explain what is really important when you’re choosing a tactic? How do you decide which strategy is going to create the largest return on what you spend? How do you differentiate your business from the ocean of competitors so people know you and trust you?”
