Twin Cities wine guru: Sioux Falls has an ‘amazing wine bar scene’

A wine expert from the Twin Cities gave a strong endorsement of the Sioux Falls wine scene following a recent visit here.

Jason Kallsen founded Twin Cities Wine Education in 1998, offering classes, private tastings and online insight.

In a recent post on his website, twincitieswine.com, he extolled the “amazing wine bar scene” in Sioux Falls.

“Yes, in little Sioux Falls on the prairie they are kicking our Twin Cities’ butts when it comes to wine bar culture,” Kallsen wrote.

He visited the city and praised Wine Time on Main for its “modern, stylish” decor and vast selection of wines by the glass.

“Nowhere in the country have I come across a selection such as this, where a wine geek can burn through a lifetime of savings on the quest to try many of the great wines of the world, all served in correct Riedel stemware and at the proper temperature,” he said.

Kallsen also stopped by R Wine Bar on East Eighth Street and gave it high marks for its historic vibe, approachable and affordable menu and live music.

“Our server was the owner’s son, a sharp as a tack 18-year old that did a better job explaining the wines than most servers I’ve encountered lately in the Twin Cities,” he said.

While Kallsen didn’t visit, he also mentioned Bin 201 and The Market for their unique wine offerings.
