TSP opens new Rapid City office

Jan. 20, 2025

Sioux Falls-based TSP has opened a new office in Rapid City.

The move builds on a 50-year history of serving the Black Hills region for the multidisciplinary firm, which offers architecture, engineering, planning and interior design.

“We’ve had the privilege of contributing to the region’s growth and transformation, and our new office further strengthens our commitment to designing its future,” said Mark Averett, TSP principal and Rapid City office leader. “As we continue to grow alongside the community, we’re excited to offer even more innovative solutions and resources to help shape its success.”

The 5,600-square-foot office at 1051 Fairmont Blvd. is constructed on an elevated site with a scenic view of the community. It’s just west of the main Monument Health campus and easily visible from Mount Rushmore Road.

The new office was intentionally designed by TSP to enhance the team’s multidisciplinary and collaborative work, the firm said. It includes a mezzanine to accommodate an alternate work environment and informal meeting and social space. A movable wall system enables the conference room to be expanded for larger gatherings.

“For clients and visitors, the new office offers convenience, including ample parking, access to main thoroughfares, improved visibility and an impressive view of Rapid City,” the firm said in a statement.

Scull Construction Service provided general contracting services for the project.

TSP’s history with Black Hills-based clients stretches back to the mid-1930s when company founder Harold Spitznagel designed Sylvan Lake Lodge at Custer State Park.

Other early work ranged from residential and military housing during World War II and liturgical projects – including Trinity Lutheran Church and the Chapel in the Hills, dedicated in 1969.

After being hired to design the community’s new civic center, TSP opened an architectural office in Rapid City in 1973, and the first professional engineer joined the staff in 1975.

TSP-designed buildings are located on the campuses of South Dakota Mines in Rapid City and Black Hills State University in Spearfish, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs and across numerous Monument Health facilities.

City Hall in Rapid City is a 1980s TSP design that originally housed offices for the city of Rapid City and Rapid City Area Schools. The TSP team recently completed space planning and renovations at the site.

The opening of the TSP office coincides with the company’s 95th anniversary.

“While we’ve helped design the foundations of communities across the Black Hills, we’re excited to open a new office that strategically positions us to better serve client needs and helps us build an even brighter future together,” Averett said.
