Trust industry leader working to start Christian school

March 16, 2021

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Logan Thune, vice president of trust services at Midland Trust Co.

Name: Logan Thune

Age: 28

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

Sioux Falls is home to me. In addition, both sets of my grandparents were from West River South Dakota, so I’ve always felt drawn to the state. And Sioux Falls is what I know.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

What doesn’t keep me in Sioux Falls? Ha-ha. On a serious note though, my family is all here, mostly, and so is my church community. They are the people I love, and the people I want to live and die with.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Our company motto is “People Make Midland,” and in light of that, I would have to say that I really enjoy the people I work with.

How did you get connected to your industry?

In college, I was connected to the trust industry through a friend and worked a summer internship at South Dakota Trust Co. After college, I worked almost four years for MetaBank as an internal auditor, and then I returned to the trust world when I joined Midland Trust Co. in 2018.

Describe Midland Trust Co. in three words.

Reliable. Relational. Responsive.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I rarely watch TV — unless it’s Husker football or playoff baseball. I love to read, compete and pheasant hunt, probably in that order.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

Though I sometimes enjoy doing volunteer work, e.g. Lunch Is Served or Feeding South Dakota, I primarily spend my time investing in my family — my wife and three kids — and church community. I believe that strong families help to support strong communities and that faithful churches proclaim — in word and deed — the Gospel message, which is the hope of the world. No society can flourish if those things are neglected. I am also working with a team of guys to launch a collaborative-model, classical Christian school in town next fall called Covenant Classical School. I’m hoping it can serve and bless our city in the educational arena for years to come.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

My wife and I used to strategize about starting a doughnut or ice cream shop in town, but then Flyboy Donuts and Stensland Family Farms ended that discussion — and we are all the better for it. At this point — and bear with me here — I think a medieval-styled pub designed specifically for playing board/card games and/or conversation, i.e. no TVs, would be fun. Niche? Maybe. Nice? You bet.

I would also gladly welcome a Trader Joe’s or In-N-Out Burger to town.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I don’t know what the future holds, but five years down the road, I see myself continuing to fight and care for the things I love. I am thankful for the job, home, family and opportunities that I’ve been given, and I want to use those things to bless those around me.
