Third-generation honey business adds blooming new venture

A longtime family business based in Brandt in eastern South Dakota has expanded from honey products to a fresh new line.
Josilyn Ulvestad, events coordinator for Quail Honey, is in business with father Eric, who owns the company.
“Quail Honey has offered locally made honey in addition to lotion, lip balm and spun honey spread,” Ulvestad said. “I like to try new things, see what people like, and I keep experimenting with new things and adding onto our lines.”
They recently added succulents, air plants and cactuses along with seasonal and classic accessories.
“A few years ago, someone approached me saying they had too many plants they were going to throw away,” Ulvestad said.
“It was something I had dabbled with, but this year, we brought the business out in its own spotlight.”
Quail Honey debuted JBeez Build a Bud at larger arts and crafts events in Brookings and Sioux Falls and will feature products at this year’s 605 Made Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Customers can find pre-made pots or create their own arrangements with a build-a-bud bar. They’ll also be able to shop for Quail Honey products, which are no stranger to the market.
“The honey and plants seem to go well together, so we’ll feature tables of local variety honey, lotions and lip balms,” Ulvestad said. “The plants will be integrated into the middle and can be incorporated into our gift boxes and any of our products.”
The 605 Made Holiday Market will be in the heated underground parking garage at Cherapa Place. Admission is free.
