TenHaken receives national mentoring award

Feb. 13, 2026

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken has been recognized nationally as the public service honoree for the 2026 Excellence in Mentoring awards by Mentor, a national nonprofit organization that champions youth mentoring.

The organization recognizes mentoring leaders across the United States who go above and beyond to positively impact the lives of young people.

According to a statement from the city of Sioux Falls, Mentor cited TenHaken’s “profound influence in the mentoring field,” noting his direct and indirect impact on young people who benefit from the presence of a caring mentor.

“Mentorship has played a pivotal role in my life and career,” TenHaken said. “I’m honored to be recognized by Mentor and proud to support efforts that help young people build strong, positive relationships to shape their future and our community. None of us can help everyone in our city, but each of us can help someone.”

During his time as mayor, TenHaken has called on residents, businesses, faith communities and nonprofits to step forward as mentors. Through the creation of the Sioux 52 Mentoring Initiative, he has united public, private and nonprofit partners around a shared goal of making Sioux Falls a true “City of Mentors.” The effort has resulted in hundreds of new mentors and dozens of programs working collaboratively.

TenHaken consistently has elevated mentoring as a cornerstone of Sioux Falls’ vision for safety and opportunity for young people and families. In partnership with the Sioux Falls Police Department and other community organizations, he has hosted multiple news conferences and countless speaking engagements to encourage residents to mentor a child at a Sioux Falls school.

In addition to mentoring an elementary school student each week, TenHaken launched the Mayor’s Youth Council in 2021. Each year, a small cohort of high school juniors and seniors meets with the mayor to share their perspectives and have a voice in city government.

TenHaken also has focused on mentoring and support for individuals transitioning from incarceration. With the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, he has advocated for educational programming and services that give those leaving the facility a chance at success in the community.

TenHaken was honored at the 2026 National Mentoring Summit on Feb. 5 in Washington, D.C.

“Mentor is proud to celebrate the 2026 Excellence in Mentoring honorees — waymakers who remind us of what’s possible when we choose to show up for young people with consistency, care and commitment,” the organization’s CEO, Jermaine Myrie, said in a statement.

“Their work and leadership strengthen the youth mentoring movement by expanding access to supportive relationships and elevating what quality mentoring can look like in communities across the country. At a time when so many young people are navigating uncertainty, these honorees stand as proof that relationships can be a powerful force for belonging, opportunity and hope. We’re inspired by their example and grateful for the momentum they help build for a future where every young person can thrive because someone believes in them.”

Mentors are still needed throughout Sioux Falls, and many organizations offer opportunities to get involved. For a list of organizations seeking volunteers or for information, call the Helpline Center at 211 or visit helplinecenter.org/volunteer-connections/sioux52.
