Taco Bell on West 12th Street is undergoing a major remodeling project that eventually will close the restaurant for six to eight weeks.

Work began today on the lobby and exterior of the restaurant at 4100 W. 12th St. Only the drive-thru is open, manager Gina Shafer said.

As construction progresses, work will shift to the kitchen and drive-thru area, so the restaurant will be closed, Shafer said.

When franchisee Border Foods closed and sold its Taco Bell site on North Cliff Avenue last year, senior vice president Barry Zelickson said the business would use its resources to upgrade other outdated restaurants in Sioux Falls.

The company has five Taco Bell locations in the city.

Beck & Hofer Construction is doing the work on the $651,000 project.
