Starbucks is coming to the main lobby of the Sanford USD Medical Center.

The coffee shop will be a licensed location for Hegg Cos., which also has a Starbucks inside the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown.

Hegg is leasing the space from Sanford.

“We’re excited to have it in our main lobby. It will be awesome,” said Andy Munce, vice president of operations for Sanford in Sioux Falls. “It looks cool and will be a natural fit.”

The 1,200-square-foot coffee shop will include seating. It’s being built in an area used for phone and internet-related services.

“We’re well underway with the design process,” CEO Paul Hegg said. “It’ll have all of the food offerings you get at a typical Starbucks, like we have at Hilton Garden Inn. “We think it’ll be a nice added benefit to staff and guests alike.”

Hegg also plans to provide delivery service within the hospital campus, which Munce said “is getting a lot of feedback from our teams.”

Employees found out about the Starbucks this week, and the service “is going to be a hit,” he said. “We have to figure out how we get it to operationalize, but we’re confident Paul and his team will make it happen. It’s been very positive.”

And because the space is leased, “it’s really a win all around,” he added. “It’s not taking anything away from what we do for patient care or strategy. I think it’s a perfect opportunity. We’re always looking for ways to enhance options for employees and patients and visitors, and this really hits all three.”

The plan is to open the new Starbucks in spring 2024.
