Let’s get a little personal.

Are you waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom?

Or maybe experiencing a little leakage when you cough, sneeze or laugh?

Jill Lorang can relate.

A registered nurse in Sioux Falls, she was waking up several times per night. Incontinence would strike even when she was at her happiest, laughing up a storm with her niece.

“When I found out Sauna Haus had the EMSELLA chair, I did my research, and I was so excited to give it a try,” she said.

The EMSELLA chair uses HIFEM technology, which stands for high-intensity focused electromagnetic.

“It’s a powerful, but harmless form of electromagnetic stimulation to contract the pelvic floor muscles,” said Lori Meyer, owner of The Sauna Haus.

She’s not kidding when she said it’s powerful. A 28-minute treatment on EMSELLA is equivalent to roughly 11,000 to 12,000 kegel exercises.

“The electromagnetic pulses bypass the brain and do the kegels for you,” Meyer said. “These contractions reeducate the muscles of incontinent clients.”

Is it literally as simple as sitting in a chair?

Yes, Lorang said.

“You basically are sitting in a very comfortable chair,” she said. “It’s best if you wear light cotton clothing or something comfortable, but you’re just sitting there half an hour. The treatments are painless, there’s no downtime, you can go back to work or run errands. It’s absolutely lovely.”

Most importantly, it was effective.

“Within the first week, I wasn’t getting up to go to the bathroom at all, so I was completely overjoyed and very pleased with the experience,” Lorang said.

The treatment is for both men and women and can help alleviate stress or urge urinary incontinence and improve sexual health, Meyer said.

“Stress incontinence is when you leak urine from sneezing, coughing, laughing or jumping. Urge incontinence is when you can’t get to the bathroom fast enough once you feel the urge to urinate,” she said.

“Strengthening the pelvic floor can also help with erectile dysfunction and improving overall sexual health in both men and women.”

The Sauna Haus at 1511 E. 69th St. is the only place in South Dakota that offers EMSELLA, Meyer said. Depending on a client’s situation, treatments could range from six to 10 sessions, which are two times weekly for three consecutive weeks.

After the initial series, maintenance treatments can be done based on individual needs.

“This technology is improving the quality of life for our clients,” Meyer said. “Clients love that there is no downtime, it’s noninvasive, and you are fully clothed during the treatment.”

Clients may begin to see improvement after the first session, but it can take up to 90 days to see results.

“We’ve had moms that can jump on the trampoline or be active with their kids again and not have to worry about leaking. We have clients that no longer worry about making it to the bathroom in time,” Meyer said.

“Many can reduce or stop wearing pads and don’t have to worry about leaking if they cough or laugh. As with all the services at The Sauna Haus, our goal is to restore quality of life using noninvasive services.”

For Lorang, it has been life-changing.

“More than 200 people worldwide experience pelvic disfunction and have bladder issues, and it’s just so fortunate Sauna Haus has the EMSELLA chair to offer our community,” she said. “If you feel comfortable talking to someone – and Lori is so easy to talk to – it will really benefit you and improve your quality of life. It truly did for me.”

Want to try EMSELLA for yourself? Stop by from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, for a free demonstration. And, when you purchase a package of six treatments in August, two will be added on for free or can be saved for maintenance treatments. If you’re unable to attend the demo Aug. 8, go to thesaunahaus.com/emsella, or call 605-271-0914 to schedule a free consultation.

RSVP to attend the demo and learn more here.

Note: Clients with certain conditions, including those with metal implants, might not be able to use EMSELLA. The Sauna Haus is offering Mat Pilates to help those clients strengthen their pelvic floor on their own. This is also a great addition for those already doing EMSELLA treatments to enhance their results and help to lengthen the time between their maintenance treatments. Come to The Sauna Haus on Aug. 8 for one of four 20-minute classes on the Introduction to Fundamentals of Mat Pilates. Each class can accommodate three people, and the cost is $20 per person.
