Sioux Falls Design Center space to transition to Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.

Dec. 12, 2019

Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. will be taking over the Sioux Falls Design Center space.

The Design Center is vacating its space at 108 W. 11th St., where it has held design-related programs and other events for eight years.

“DTSF will be creating a special membership level for design nonprofit and academic organizations of the Sioux Falls Design Center,” the Design Center said in a statement.

Downtown Sioux Falls will rebrand the space as the Downtown Sioux Falls Studio, president Joe Batcheller said.

“For the most part we are going to be operating it in a very similar fashion as the Sioux Falls Design Center,” he said. “We’re just rolling it into our member benefits and making it available for members to host events there. I think it opens up some exciting possibilities especially for ‘b to b’ businesses who want to get in front of new audiences. It’s pretty exciting.”

The Sioux Falls Design Center’s executive director, Kellen Boice, left this fall to become executive director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

The Sioux Falls Design Center was created as an entity to champion design in the community. It organized Sioux Falls Design Week, hosted exhibits and competitions, and put on events.

“However, the greatest legacy of the SFDC has been its capacity to provide an environment in which designers and the public could interact, innovate and create,” it said.

The organization said it will maintain its nonprofit status, activity and presence through grants and community partnerships.

In an email to its members, Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. said they would be able to rent event space at the Design Center for an hourly rate.
