Nov. 1, 2022
Sioux Falls building activity has nearly doubled from 2021’s record year.
Through October, the value of building permits totaled $1.77 billion, compared with $917 million for the same time last year.
By far the biggest jump is in new commercial construction, which eclipsed $1 billion on its own, versus $343.8 million last year.
Large projects that were issued permits in October include a $3.9 million expansion at Sioux Falls Christian School and a $3.4 million office, warehouse and fabrication shop for Architectural Roofing Systems at 4700 N. Wilcox Drive.
Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $326 million through October, compared with $240.3 million last year.
New residential construction is the only area that is lagging behind 2021 at $231.6 million, compared with $272.2 million. That reflects 612 new homes being built, compared with 782 last year.
Residential additions and remodeling projects are twice what they were last year, totaling $123.6 million, compared with $61.5 million.
The city has issued permits for 3,255 multifamily units, compared with 1,595 for the same time last year.
