Through August, permits issued in the city totaled $689.9 million, compared with $725.8 million for the same time last year — but still less than half the $1.5 billion in permits issued for the first eight months of 2022.

New residential construction is ahead of last year at $136.3 million, compared with $115.9 million. That includes 372 single-family homes, versus 286 homes for the same time in 2023.

Residential additions and remodeling projects totaled $60 million, down from $71 million a year ago.

New commercial activity is pulling even with 2023, totaling $369.1 million, compared with $373.3 million for the same time last year.

Commercial additions and remodels are lagging behind last year at $124.5 million, compared with $165.6 million.

So far this year, permits have been issued for 1,042 multifamily housing units, compared with 1,255 last year and 2,873 two years ago.

The largest projects that were issued permits in August include three apartment complexes:

  • Split Rock Apartments at 26th Street and Six Mile Road, $30 million.
  • Hidden Valley Stables Apartments off West 57th Street at 4704 S. Cink Place, $29 million.
  • 41 Ellis, first phase at 3400 S. Broek Drive, $14.6 million.
